Lottery: Number 16 hasn't come up all year!

The number “16” has not come up once during the entire 2001 calendar year so far in New York Lotto. Not even as a Bonus Number!

On one hand, we are “due” for a 16. But on the other hand, maybe there is something seriously wrong with the 16 ball.

I know it should be completely random, but if you were a betting man (or woman), would you be more inclined, or less inclined, to include it in your next bet?

Lotteries are 100% unequivocally random. I always think it’s either hilarious or incredibly sad when someone says “I just missed winning! They pulled a 6 for the final number and I had a 7. That’s so close!” Uh, it’s no closer than any other number. It’s not like they pick them out of a line or something.

A lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.

I’ve always received my best grades in English.

Each week is an independent event and the odds of getting a 16 are identical each time. All past events are irrelevant. Still, an argument can be made for not picking 16. Dipweeds who do not understand probability (the majority of lottery players) will tend to avoid 16. Therefore, if you do win the lottery you will be less likely to have to split your winnings with another player if your numbers hit.
