I was in Louisville this weekend and stopped in at Mark’s Feed Store BBQ on Bardstown Rd. one night for a quick dinner. I had what may be the best burger I’ve ever had, and I was wondering what the general consensus was about their food (I see they’re a chain) by the locals?
I’m a Louisville native living in Indianapolis currently. There are a number of pretty good barbecue places there.
Mark’s is absolutely fantastic, and probably the best, IMHO. If you have a chance to go back and try the barbecue, you should definitely do so. And get the roasted corn-on-the-cob as one of your sides. It’s delicious.
I used to love Mark’s, but last time I went there (November) I was very disappointed. I had been getting the BBQ chicken, but this time it seemed they’d changed the recipe. I can’t say if the pork had also been changed. This was the Shelbyville Road store - maybe the Bardstown Road store is still good.
I do second the corn-on-the-cob, which remains excellent.
I’ve eaten there, but not lately. I just came in to mention though that the location on Bardstown Road used to be a place called Another Place Sandwich Shop, and I ate there all the time when I was in college. Or drank there. They had $1 pitchers of beer during all ball games. A dollar. For a pitcher. OF BEER.
Of course, it was the early '80s. <weeps for lost youth>
I did have the corn on the cob, and it was great! I had a burger only because I’d been craving a good burger for so long, but if I’m ever back in town I’ll make a point of trying their barbecue.
The other amazing thing was how cheap it was. Around these parts, it’s $12-14 for a dry burger. This was (IIRC) $8.75 for the best bacon cheeseburger I’ve eaten in recent memory. I seriously can’t stop thinking about it…
Love their potato salad.
Mark’s has the best ribs in town. They are about the only true fall-off-the-bone ribs I have found in town. The chicken on the bone is always good, but the boneless chicken breast leaves something to be desired. I was actually thinking of going there tonight. And their Buttermilk Pie is about my most favorite thing in the world. Most people I know around here love the place, and it is always busy (Middletown location).
I remember that they used to have a location in Lexington (Richmond Rd. before Man o’ War) and we went there all the time because it never, ever had a wait. Unfortunately while that was good for me…it was not for them. So when I moved to Louisville, Mark’s was the first place I went.
I spent a year living in Louisville, and I agree - one of the best stops in Louisville, one of a handful of places I make it a point to go hit when I’m on that side of the state (along with Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen - also on Bardstown - and Bucca Di Beppo’s (not a local eat, but I don’t have one near here!)).
I didn’t realize that we had so many Dopers from the Louisville area! I lived there for several years. Born and raised just across the river. Still live within shouting distance.
And Mark’s is great, especially the Bardstown Road location.
