OK here’s the twist. GO back and vote if you haven’t already before reading everyone’s answers.
So, there’s a meme going around. Supposedly, which storyline in Love Actually you liked the most is a sort of litmus test for your personality, and maybe your love life.
What do you think your choice says about you?
For me, I really loved all the storylines, but my favorite two were probably Jamie & Aurelia, and Daniel, Sam and Joanna. The first, maybe it resonates with my own attempts at flirting with non English speakers, or maybe it’s how they seem to be all flustered over their work relationship but they don’t realize it’s really stemming from their growing affection. The second - what a great father son relationship! I like the super genuineness and honesty between them. And the willingness to go after what they want despite it being challenging. “Let’s get the shit kicked out of by love” indeed!
I was tempted to vote for Karl just because Rodrigo is super hot, and Juliet/Peter/Mark just because the wedding scene was phenomenal.
I guess in all four cases it boils down to me going for exotic types, and being optimistic and idealistic.
I had to pick three:
1.) Billy Mack and Joe, just because they were funny.
2.) Sarah, Karl, and Michael because the love scene was hot and more so because it was such a heartbreaking and admirable sacrifice that she made for her brother.
3.) John and Judy, because they were so sweet and innocent together despite their line of work!
Juliet, Peter, and Mark almost got clicked but I decided I needed to stop somewhere or I would end up clicking the whole list. (Except for Harry, Karen, and Mia. Bastard.)
Jamie and Aurélia was my favorite. There is something about overcoming an obstacle as great as language for love, and then discovering your beloved was doing the same thing that makes me smile.
After that, it’s got to be Billy Mack and Joe. Or maybe David and Natalie, but I think the latter appeals to me because I like Hugh Grant and the singing policeman cracks me up every time.
Sarah, Karl & Michael - reflects, sort of, the choice I made to put my kid ahead of my dating preferences. She needs me more than I need a boyfriend.
Very (very) closely followed by Harry Karen & Mia, because that’s the relationship I’ve always aspired to, not the cheating, the forgiving and working through and I have a major girl crush on Emma Thompson.
Jamie & Aurelia, nice fantasy.
Billie Mack & Joe, I swear I know these two.
Daniel Sam & Joanna, the real love story is between the step-father and son.
The rest are entertaining padding to me. I fast forward through David’s parts even though I like Natalie.
It’s a nice story, but I don’t see that he’s risking much. Where’s the problem when the media gets hold of the story? They are both single, Natalie is no longer working on the staff at No 10, and Natalie comes from a respectable working-class or lower-middle-class family. I think the media and the public will like David even more when they find out about Natalie.
I don’t think there are any set answers. I was hoping everyone would help out and tell us what they think each choice reveals about themselves or others!
Rufus the shopkeeper angel? That wasn’t the Rowan Atkinson bit where he gift-wraps the locket while Alan Rickman goes quietly insane, was it? If so, I need some justification for thinking of him as an angel in disguise.
It’s in the DVD extras - he originally had a scene in every storyline but most of those scenes were not necessary and the movie was running far too long.
He was originally supposed to be in more scenes, acting to help out the various characters without them realizing it, and then disappear in the end revealing he was an angel. But all that got cut out in editing and what was left were the shopkeeper and airport scenes. I figured anyone who would vote for him already knew the backstory, and anyone who needed an explanation wouldn’t have voted for him anyway.
I also toyed with giving “epilogue” as an option on the ballot wince Wiki lists it as it’s own story segment, but decided against it.
God, it’s so hard to pick (I’m reminded yet again of how much I love that movie), but I went with Billy Mack and Joe, because it’s such a lovely (sic) reminder that there are other kinds of love besides romantic and/or sexual love.
The only one I *disliked * was Juliet, Peter and Mark. I’d honestly, if I knew my best pal was pining after a recently-married girl like that (and the video he shows her was kinda creepy) have punched him in the face and told him to suck it up and move on.
The rest of them were very fun. I genuinely felt bad for Sarah dealing with her brother; that’s not easy to juggle. I hope they tough it out. Hard choice between David and Natalie & Jamie and Aurélia.
