Almost a year has gone by since the story of octopus lovers J-1 and Aurora captivated the imaginations of the masses. Now, CNN reports that their love hascome to fruition with the hatching of the first of thousands of eggs. Months after aquarium staff had given up on the eggs, Aurora, a candidate for Mother of the Year if ever there was one, refused to give up.
The blessed event almost didn’t happen. The staff was draining the tank but Aurora refused to give up.
Give Meghan a raise and her own parking spot!
Sadly, J-1 did not survive to witness the blessed event. He died of old age in September, after having been removed from Aurora’s tank for “crankiness.” Aurora herself is probably not long for this world. Females of her species tend to die after spawning, because they stop eating for months and devote themselves to defending their eggs.
Awww~The baby’s so cute! (What does that say about the wonderful universal design of infants that I find a baby octopus cute in the same way I find my baby daughter cute? Weird.)
yer kid looks like that? Where’s Dad from again? France?
It’s the eyeses. Cute babies have eyeses, & earses that are much larger in proportion to their face than on the adult model. Kittens & puppies, for example.
