Love for the octopus, part II

Almost a year has gone by since the story of octopus lovers J-1 and Aurora captivated the imaginations of the masses. Now, CNN reports that their love hascome to fruition with the hatching of the first of thousands of eggs. Months after aquarium staff had given up on the eggs, Aurora, a candidate for Mother of the Year if ever there was one, refused to give up.

The blessed event almost didn’t happen. The staff was draining the tank but Aurora refused to give up.

Give Meghan a raise and her own parking spot!

Sadly, J-1 did not survive to witness the blessed event. He died of old age in September, after having been removed from Aurora’s tank for “crankiness.” Aurora herself is probably not long for this world. Females of her species tend to die after spawning, because they stop eating for months and devote themselves to defending their eggs.

Congratulations Aurora!

sniff Such a… beautiful story. I’m glad to hear it worked out.

Awww~The baby’s so cute! (What does that say about the wonderful universal design of infants that I find a baby octopus cute in the same way I find my baby daughter cute? Weird.)

Yay for Aurora!

yer kid looks like that? Where’s Dad from again? France?

It’s the eyeses. Cute babies have eyeses, & earses that are much larger in proportion to their face than on the adult model. Kittens & puppies, for example.

Awwww, it wooks wike a widdle baby Cthulhu.

Idako! yummy yummy!

I think it looks like a Metroid. A cute Metroid.

Heh heh heh heh.

The news story I read said that she might survive a bit longer since staff are handfeeding her and she’s accepting it.

LOL - my thoughts exactly.

A cuddly wuddly widdly baby Cthulhu.

Just don’t piss it off.

Congratulations to Aurora! Octopus are one of my favorite creatures. Any reason to celebrate more of them is great.

So, will any of these kids grow up to be gangsters?
