Well, growing up in Washington state, I never could understand why Wisconsin and Minnesota are considered the “Northwest”. Like the slogan on cans of Schmidt beer (made in Milwaukee): “The Brew that Grew with the Great Northwest!”.
That’s how he sings it now.
Chicago certainly qualifies under this definition, sitting as it does on the shore of Lake Michigan.
Non-standard usage to apply it to a lake rather than the ocean, sure. Wrong, well, not technically.

I kept trying to hear “Isle of Crete”.
Are you sure it’s not “Isles of Greece”? That would be a little forced, since people usually say “the Greek Isles”, but Greece does have a number of islands (including Crete).
