Low Sugar, Atkins, Low Carb advice

Sounds yummy, jar, but you might want to try to get in a green salad or something tomorrow, too. You really should try to get as many veggies as you’re allowed every day.

You’ll be even crabbier tomorrow and the next day, but it should get better soon after that. Good luck!

(By the way, if you’re trying to keep track of carbs every day, I highly recommend http://www.fitday.com).

Ditto on more veggies…

I was very crabby for the first few days- and will relapse into crabbiness if I forget my veggies.

Don’t be afraid of veggies… they didn’t make you fat and they won’t know. They are your friends

Again… saying it because I’ve been there. More veggies, definitely.

They won’t NOW not KNOW LOL… well they might knot know :).

Wish this board had an edit…

Been on Atkins since June 19th and have lost 31 pounds. The first 72 hours were BRUTAL… my favorite lunch was a KFC biscuit and potatoes with gravy…eeek! Cheap, but not “okay”!.. I weight 173 pounds, today I weigh 146 with a goal weight of 135. I have never gone off “Induction” (know thyself). The Atkin’s peanut butter cups have been my saving grace. They come 3 to a package / entire package has 2 net carbs, and I save them for the evening to have with my coffee (never did quit the caffeine). Have you gone to www.atkinsdiet.com ? YOU can do this if I can!!!

Good luck!

BTW: I know the “math doesn’t figure” - neglected to mention I went berserk for two weeks … shortly after starting, so I “revised” my start weight as 177 because that’s where I started my Journaling (on the atkin’s website).

I have tons of self created recipes if you want them… I marathon cook every Sunday, for the week, for my “Atkins buddy” and I at work.

Repeat after me: I am comfortable, lean to my liking, and happy with the way I look and feel! The mind is a powerful thing.

I’ve lost about 30 pounds doing Atkins, and dropped my blood pressure abot 30 points (from dangerously high to just moderately high). I cook up a bunch of chicken breasts, thin-cut pork chops, steaks or whatever on the old George Foreman once a week or so and eat lots of small meals a day. Cheese is good–smoked gouda is almost as good as chocolate. Pumpkin seeds, canteloupe, strawberries, blueberries too. Scrambled eggs with Tabasco–yum!

My advice is to seriously follow the advice about drinking lots of water and taking fiber supplements regularly; otherwise–maybe next week, maybe three months from now–constipation will be a problem. Trust me on this. And don’t forget to budget for your new wardrobe!

Not to get too personal but constipation has ALWAYS been a problem in my life, so that will be nothing new. My problem right now during induction is breakfasts. Eggs tend to give me an upset stomach if I eat too many, and of course the fruit intake right now not allowed…so I foresee a series of deli turkey and cheese rollups for the next two weeks :frowning:

I do have a lot of veggies in the house, and have planned them in to the menu for this week, including chicken fajita skewers with guacamole, and a big chicken ceasar salad for mr. jar and I. yum yum

jarbabyj, I went through a several month period of eating sugar-free cheesecake for breakfast every day. Just a thought.

I usually have an Atkins bar for breakfast or even (and this took some getting used to) a salad or left-over vegetables from last night’s dinner. The Atkins brand makes cereals and breads, but they’re really expensive ($10 for a loaf of bread!) and not very good, if you ask me. A few months ago, I was dying for pancakes and bought the Atkins pancake mix and fake syrup – horrible. Avoid at all costs.

You can take amino acid supplements to combat cravings – glutamine is good for sugar cravings, and phenylalanine is good for general hunger. If you stay away from the Atkins brand, you can find these supplements pretty cheaply. Puritan’s Pride has tons and tons of vitamins, minerals, fiber supplements, etc. for a very good price.

Good luck! Atkins has been great to me. After losing 30lbs I’m eating pretty much everything, just smaller portions of breads, rice, pasta, etc.

For sugar cravings NOW, after the weight is gone, I indulge HEAVILY. You can. Screw-it, you lost 50 lbs, eat all the flippin’ ice-cream and Reese’s cups you want! PIG OUT! No guilt, no worries, no nothing. Just don’t do it 2 days in a row. Eat jam out of the jar and pour syrup on your pancakes and eat 10 oranges, then be good for a week- you’ll have no problems. It is really nice to be able to control your weight like this. You can splurge when you want, at weddings, etc. and all you have to do is follow a sensible diet for a few days afterward (and maybe exercise a bit harder just for good measure).

During the weight loss your cravings will lessen. Maybe not disappear, but they will be easilly controlled. Some things I did:

Coffee: Half and half the Tomcat way: Half a mug of full cream, half coffee, one sacharine tablet. Awesome way to start the day! But just one! Try and cut coffee out completely, but this is a good start.

Speaking of cream…you can drink it! Got a craving? Drink a half glass of cream. MMMM–mmmm-good! You will love the Atkins diet solely for this experience of drinking a glass of cream guilt-free! Feel the silky goodness spread around your mouth and watch your weight drop the next morning.

Big crunchy salad with real Buttermilk Ranch. Chomp-chomp-crunch-crunch.

Vitamin fizzies: I’ve seen them sold in the US, you might be able to find them. They normally come in a tube (like a large cigar tube) and are vitamin tablets that you drop in water like Alka-seltzer. They have sacharine and a carb-sweetner, but the total carbs per tablet is like 1. Tasty and they give you extra vitamins, so enjoy. Maybe try Crystal-lite.

Remember, you can savour a small piece of candy if you are good during the rest of the day. 1 Reeses mini probably has under 5 grams of carbs, so if you can eat 50 carbs after induction, plan for 45 and enjoy a quick treat. If you want to be healthier than that, plan for 35 and eat a fruit yogurt cup.

Enjoy! The induction sucks, but it gets easier after that. BE WARNED: I hit a 4 week plateau after a few months. No loss at all during that time. I couldn’t understand what was happening and almost gave up, and then BAM! the 5th week I lost 5 lbs. Don’t give up if this happens to you. And when you are done losing your 50 lbs next spring, buy yourself a real sexy swimsuit for the summer!

As for eating after you have lost the weight, I have added fruit and bread and rice, etc. back into my diet in small amounts and am doing fine. Just don’t go back to the “I don’t want to cook tonight, let’s just eat pasta with butter and parmesan, m’kay?” After you have lost the weight, just reduce the amounts of carb-food and you’ll keep it off. Half portions of potatoes, rice, pasta, etc is not such a terrible thing to adhere to for the rest of your life.

Take care-

The Atkins food is terribly expensive, and not all that great, IMO. The bars are really pricey, and not all that tasty. The shakes are nearly $3 apiece and not very good.

Trader Joe’s has some low carb bars called Low-Carb II that are really good and only about $1.79 rather that the $2.89 or so that the Atkins protein bars run. TJ’s is the only place around here that I can find them.
Pria also makes some protein bars that are only about 15 carbs or so (varies depending on the flavor) that are about $1.30 or so. Once you’re off Induction, you can eat one for breakfast or lunch if you’re on the run.
Read the labels on the protein bars carefully - some have 45 or more carbs! They’re nothing but sugar.

Salads are great; you can even have real dressing. None of that fat-free crap! You can have cheese, a hard-boiled egg, sunflower seeds, real bacon bits, and chopped veggies.
Just no croutons.
