I’m up to my neck in my current book and have two more on tap, but was pondering, “What other esoteric person can I write about and be in no danger of actually making any money?”
I adore actor/director Lowell Sherman: he was always terrific, kind of a road-company John Barrymore. He sent Lillian Gish out in the snow in Way Down East and was the original “Norman Maine” character in What Price Hollywood?, he directed Mae Mest in She Done Him Wrong, Katharine Hepburn in Morning Glory, Mae Murray’s failed comeback vehicles High Stakes and Bachelor Apartment, as well as The Greeks Had a Word for Them and Becky Sharpe . . . He was at “Fatty” Arbuckle’s party that night, was a pall bearer for Russ Columbo, married Helene Costello (her sister Dolores was John Barrymore’s wife & Drew’s grandmother) . . .
Any Lowell Sherman fans in the house? Here is a photo of him, which really doesn’t capture his charm…
Just now finishing the research and gotta settle down to writing it . . . I’m hoping it’ll be out in aught-seven.
Don’t want to mention the two next possible subjects, as I don’t know if either of them are really possibilities: got to get my publisher to say okay, and also have to see if there’s enough info on them to get books out of.
I’ll tell the publisher we have one presold copy of Lowell Sherman, though! If we can sell four or five others, I’ll beat my all-time record . .
