Luann, the occasionally recurring thread

Rather than resurrect the old thread with a question for a name, I thought I’d create a new one.

Since we left off last (a year or two ago), it is still unclear if Luann is getting any, but on the today’s strip, Les(ley) made a pretty obvious pass at Tiffany.

Since I’m guessing that she is the thief and is utterly broke, why not put her together with the loser who is the nephew of the shady guy.

That would mean redeeming Lesley, which would be bad. I like him slimy. But the strip isn’t Mary Worth, so there would have to be a redemption arc.

They haven’t identified the thief to us, but the April 25 strip showed the security guy saying he knew who it was while Bernice hovered over his shoulder presumably looking at the security video. If the thief were Tiffany, I’d expect this would have gone differently.

Of course, he specifically kept it gender-neutral (“suspect”, not guy or girl), so maybe it will be Tiffany after all. But I doubt it.

As for Lesley, I could see him turning to the good under the influence of Tiffany, or I could see this as another Tiffany redemption arc where she is tempted by Lesley but does the right thing in the end.

Why would they need redemption? I can see scummy Leslie and his uncle’s connections benefiting Tiffany and her not giving two shits how it happens.

Back in 2012 when everyone was in high school, Leslie made a slimy pass at Tiffany on the level of “YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT, baby.”

I guess Evans forgot that particular plot.

Leslie also made a slimy pass at Rosa, whom Gunther heroically defended by…uh…bumping Leslie with his backpack.

But Rosa was Good and Tiffany is Evil, so no one gave a damn about Tiffany. (Her bestie Crystal actually slut-shamed her afterward for coming to school with a bare midriff.)

No one “needs” redemption. But it’s a family comic and the audience loves that shit, so feel-good story arcs are bound to happen.

I’m still hoping that Gunther rides Tiffany like a wild monkey. I do like that Gunther is upset at Les’ attention to Tiffany and that makes him realize that he really loves her after all.

i have a friend that swears tiffany should just come out all ready with luann or Bernice since if the writer was smart they could use the confused/frustrated angle to explain why shes such a bitch…

Tiffany is a rich girl with a rich father. She is not ‘broke’. She did not steal that tv.

The security guard said it was in room 4___ and Tiffany’s room is a different number. If it had been her who stole it (and she already said she owns 6 tv’s so why on earth would she steal another one, with a rich father!) it would have been a BFD in the strip.

Gunther is a loser who asked her as a friend to be a buffer at the mothers dinner party. He is annoyed because instead of suffering with him in silence, Tiffany is having a good time and talking to his old nemesis and making him laugh. I doubt he ‘loves’ her, certainly she doesn’t love him.

How is she ‘utterly broke’, why would a rich girl with 6 tvs steal another one, and how is it the security guard said the thief was in room ----whatever, which is not Tiffany’s room? Are you reading the same strip?

No, she writes a slightly different version for me. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think everyone is re-writing this comic strip in their own heads to suit their taste!

Is there any other mainstream comic that gets so much attention here?

I read it, yes, but I find the level of interest here… disproportionate to the audience.

Wasn’t there something about Dez giving someone a scarf that had been stolen?
I have to admit I’m fuzzy on my recollection though.

I think it’s because we’ve made a puzzle out of it. Interest first peaked with the question if Luann was getting any. We convinced ourselves there were purposeful clues by the cartoonist and with enough analysis, we could crack the code.

Now the puzzles have moved to more boring topics like who stole a TV, yet we’re stuck. Must…solve…Luann…

When For Better Or Worse was still running, it spawned a lot of discussion here.

You guys DO visit the Comics Curmudgeon blog, don’t you? I’ve always enjoyed the blather about the funny papers here, and that’s a site where ALL the blather is about the funny papers. Josh Fruhlinger is a national treasure.
