Luke Cage trailer is out

Argh. Can’t access given the network I am linked to for this project I am working on. Have to wait until this evening.

Well, I’m pumped. But then Luke Cage is pretty badass, so it would be hard not to be.

I really need to finish Jessica Jones and Daredevil though.

Damn, that is one good looking guy.

Needs more shimmy shimmy ya.

Saw it. I’m in.

So Jessica Jones must show up later in the series.

And I notice there’s no Power Man in the title.

Or not at all. She might not hook back up with him until the Defenders miniseries.

He’d better say “Sweet Christmas” at some point.

You know, I’ve been thinking that the Marvel Netflix series would have been so completely awesome if they’d all been done as 1970s period pieces. That would have been incredible.

He does. From Wikipedia: “Colter noted that the character’s catch phrase ‘Sweet Christmas’ would be used in the series, saying “I was afraid of that phrase, but it actually fits so well, I don’t know why, I don’t know why it fits so well into Luke’s mouth.””

Looks like it’s sticking with the night time Daredevil colour palette, rather than the daylight of Jessica Jones.

Love how when he comes out of that chamber he is wearing the Power Man headpiece.

And the wristbands.

I’m guessing this is an origin story set before the Jessica Jones series. Or maybe straddling it. My one problem with it so far is that he only seems to be up against normal crooks who don’t have a chance against him. Watching him get punched and shot without any effect looks fun for a while but I’m not sure it will hold my interest for the whole series.

I suspect you’re right about when it is set. I have not been delving behind the scenes on the making of these Netflix Marvel series, but I had been under the impression that they were, basically, kind of sequential - i.e., Luke Cage would pick up perhaps with some overlap with JJ’s timeline, such as them meeting, and then carry it forward. Kinda like the MCU movies, where they all exist in the same time flow, and come together in Avengers/Cap III movies. So all the Netflix shows would converge on The Defenders.

I believe the Defenders will still be a convergence point, but the shows will function differently vs. the MCU in how they get there. Totally fine IMHO - just noodling it through.

As for Luke Cage not facing powered enemies - I hear you, but am happy to see how this goes. Mike Colter is just a great pick - his Cage radiates power and being comfortable with himself as he figures out how to use his powers.

I’m thinking it will happen after Jessica Jones. He’ll head back to Harlem after his bar explodes to deal with the shit he left behind because the whole deal with Jessica has shown him you can’t run away from your past.

Well one thing is that in this version of the MU, people with powers are a still somewhat of a rarity and those with powers seem to keep to themselves. So it’s not surprising we aren’t seeing a lot of ‘super’ fights shown yet.

Secondly if we look back at the Golden Age of comics and even the old tv show, the majority of the time, Superman faced off against normal crooks. He often had to rely on more than just punching to find a solution, even though there was plenty of punching and gun throwing.

One of the interesting topics of super-heroics is what do you do when you have power, but not enough power? What do you do when you can’t just punch someone to solve a problem? How do you fight a corrupt system which has it’s hooks into various parts of the government? Do you punch the alderman, the councilman, the police commissioner and so on?

It’s a lot easier to stop another super-powered individual, but much more difficult to defeat a corrupt system. I think that’s that foe Cage is going to be fighting, although at the top on the chain of command there may be a super, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Cage’s real power would be as a catalyst for change, not merely the agent of change.

Yeah, they hinted that you couldn’t just invincible your way to solving Harlem’s problems, but that’s all we see Cage trying, and being quite successful at. I can’t wait for them to make me despise the bad guys he’s bulldozing his way through, but otherwise I’d like to know what the real conflict is going to be.

In the comic, Cage and Claire Temple date off and on for years, and given Dawson’s prominence in the trailer, it looks like they’re focusing on that relationship rather than revisiting him and Jessica. Things could get messy when the Defenders starts - Matt and Claire, Claire and Luke, Luke and Jessica…

Yeah, i find it hard to believe it could take place before Jessica Jones, he wouldn’t be a complete unknown. Hadn’t she basically been stalking him since she realized she killed his wife?
