Yep. I’ve been waiting months for this night and alas, it’s raining. It’s stormy and I am angry, let down and sad. I wanted to watch the gradual stages and possibly document them on film. The peak is around 11 pm (i’m in the eastern usa) so maybe by then these good ol north carolin skies will clear and I’ll enjoy the show.
Anyway, if not tonight, theres another in november I believe, which seems to be rather rare…two in a year and all…
I’m sorry. Though I am glad that I found your post. I did not know that there was going to be one tonight so now I can go watch it. Feel good that you spread the news for others to see it!
Man, I was just about to start a thread about this! [sub]Total lunar eclipse happening RIGHT NOW and I CAN’T SEE A THING!![/sub] I was looking forward to it, but now with all this rain can’t see a thing up there.
I’m quite disappointed. Weather was pretty decent all day today - but what happens as soon as it gets dark? It gets cloudy - not a thing to be seen.
I’d been looking forward to this.
I’m watching it live on MSN. It’s not as fun as the real thing, but better than nothing, I guess. Stupid rain.
I was thinking about going over to the Natural History Museum, as it said in the paper they were going to let people check out the eclipse from their observatory, but noooooo, it had to rain TONIGHT…grumble grumble
I can see it… it took F’ing forever for that last little sliver to go dark. Pretty cool, though. I’ll check back outside in a few when it starts to go back.
I don’t think it’s raining tonight. I swear it’s perfectly clear out.
Oops. Different time zones at work here.
In all honesty it is clear here but we had to miss the whole onset. The moon has just cleared the horizon and is already at full eclipse.
God, don’t I love sky phenomena…
Yeah, same as Monkeymensch-- when the moon came up it was already pretty well covered. It’s a bit underwhelming but still a bit bizarre looking. Very dull and fuzzy but some of that might be from the ambient lights.
I just posted in the other thread (BBQ Pit). I am seeing the end of the eclipse. We had some heavy clouds earlier, but Luna has appeared finally as a beautiful, red, glowing orb.
Dopers, please come out to New Mexico for the next eclipse…you will not be disappointed. Must dash outside again!
You know, kids are funny. I dragged my niece and her boyfriend, both of whom are sixteenish, outside to see this wonderful sight. Right now it’s a perfect meld of illuminated moon, with reddish penumbra, and a smidge of real dark umbra. They both said, “Cool.” And then headed immediately back inside.
Ah well, youth. And the spring of certainty that reassures one that what you see is no big deal…
Here’s a picture I took after it was done. My digital camera isn’t good enough to pick up totality - not enought light.
I live on the west side of a big hill, so the eclipse was well underway by the time it cleared the trees here. I took a few shots through the branches, then lugged everything over to the park across the street. Then right at totality the clouds came in and the moon disappeared. Then they cleared, and I enjoyed the total lunar eclipse. Then the clouds came back, then they were gone again. So I’m not too happy with the pictures, but I did enjoy watching the eclipse.
A bunch of folks from the local astronomy club gathered in front of the museum where I work to watch the eclipse, but the clouds teased us all night. There were plenty of clear spots in the sky, but they almost never were in the same place as the Moon. At best, it made brief, 10-second hazy appearances before hiding again. Just before totality, it started to rain, and that was it for the night. Aaargh!
At least we got to see a really bright (-8 mag) Iridium flare!
It was quite clear here in the Twin Cities - but there was hardly any color to the moon. Other lunar eclipses I’ve seen have turned the moon a very nice shade of bubble-gum pink. This one was just a grey and (very pale) peach smudge.
Arrrgh.
Osbie, I would’ve described it as pale gold.
Really? Hmmm, it looked quite peachy to me - possibly due to the tinting on my sunglasses?
(Yes, of course I’m joking.)
It was clear here, but it took awhile for the sky to get dark enough to see it. By the time I finally spotted the eclipsed moon it was in the middle of totality. All I could see was a dim reddish disk. I went to my mom and dad’s house (a half mile away) and pointed it out for them since they wanted to see it, too. I took some shots with my video camera. My digital camera couldn’t zoom in close enough, but at least I can generate some still video captures.
For those of you who got rained out, another one will occur in November (no cite, just what they said on TV).
Hey, I saw it last night afterall. The skies cleared after 11 and I didn’t get to see each phase, however I did see the final result. I think it was beautiful and look forward to november.
Got to see pieces of it, but we had pretty heavy cloud cover here last night.
About three hours waiting for the clouds to clear here in the great NW, then a 30-second glimpse very near the end. Ah, well…
