Luxuriamusic.com has got it going on

I don’t ordinarily indulge in unstinting praise of anything, but luxuria music:

http://www.luxuriamusic.com

has REALLY got it going on. It’s a live streaming radio station that does all kinds of weird and cool stuff from all sorts of odd corners of the music industry. And it’s not really novelty music, a lot of it is just good listening. It’s classified as “Eclectic” on the Itunes menu of streaming radio stations.

Thanks to luxuria, I went to itunes and got some REALLY tasty music. “Drums A Go Go” by the Hollywood Persuaders. Basia’s cover of “The Waters of March.” The BBC Orchestra’s version of “Sing, Sing, Sing.” “Deep Purple” by Nino Tempo and April Stevens. Or “Morticia’s Theme” by Combustible Edison.

With the exception of “Deep Purple” I’d never heard any of these before. Hell, I’d never heard OF Basia, Combustible Edison or the Hollywood Persuaders. I would never have encountered them except for Luxuria Music.

Even the stuff that isn’t worth buying is often fun to listen to, like Claudine “Ski Shooter” Longet’s wistful song “Jenji.”

I highly recommend it for those who like to find really excellent music that doesn’t fit comfortably within genre or standard playlists. And by excellent I mean the stuff you listen to over and over because it’s just too good not to listen to again.

Now, I know you’re wondering … how much is Luxuria Music paying me for this post? Then answer is zip, nada, nothing. I don’t have any kind of personal, social or financial relationship with anyone at Luxuria music, nor does anyone I know.

(OK, Mrs. Evil Captor, aka TerrorCotta, is a subscriber, but so what, just because you subscribe to the Atlanta Constitution, it doesn’t mean you have a real financial relationship with them.)

I’m just saying they’re so good because … they’re so DAMN good.

Other Luxuria fans feel free to gimme an “Amen” here.

Combustible Edison did the soundtrack for the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez anthology film Four Rooms, and their song “Spy Vs. Spy” was featured in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (and also on Mad TV’s old “Spy Vs. Spy” animated shorts, I believe). They’re a lounge act, inspired by Esquivel’s wacky, swanky, retro “space-age bachelor pad music.” I’ve seen them live twice, but I don’t know if they’re still together or not.

And Basia had a couple of Top 40 hits on US radio in the late 80s, early 90s, including one tune to hit #1 on the club charts (“Drunk on Love”). She’s best known for her album “Warsaw London New York.”

Thanks for the link!

Interesting. On the website Luxuria descirbes itself as “space-age bachelor pad music.” I don’t know if I buy that description, but swanky and retro fits like a glove in a lot of instances.

The term “space-age bachelor pad music” originated with an Esquivel compilation album title from 1994. My personal website is actually called the Space-Age Bachelor Pad even though I talk about action figures and comics and food as well as music.

Yeah, I looked up the Wiki entry on her because it was obvious I had missed some major musical goodness there. A shame, given that there are so many women who can’t sing well at all that the media have thrust forward as The Very Thing we should all be listening to. She’s got a three fucking octave range and she can control her voice in every octave. Why did the media think Madonna was so great when there were people like HER around?

That’s why I value Luxuria. Who knows what else that’s really great that I missed entirely that’s lurking out there.

In fact, I’d say luxuria is in my mind, a Doper kind of radio station – smart, funny, has its own sensibility, doesn’t buy into media bullshit much.

Hey, the Wikipedia page on Combustible Edison says that its leader, The Millionaire (Michael Cudahy), founded Luxuriamusic.com!

Oh, I hate to keep bumping this thread up, but I’m obviously a fan of this kind of music, and I have another wonderful Internet radio website to recommend, SomaFM.com. They have a lot of loungey exotica, and plenty more dark, sexy, retro stuff for you hipsters and swingers.

Excellent. Maybe we can set up a Doper Radio Network – all cool stuff, all the time!
