Lyda Roberti, The Woman No Man Can Resist (youtube clip)

Yes. Especially since in 1932 the Navy (the U.S. Navy, anyway) was many times the size of the Army, and considered much more important to the so-called national defense.

Except, of course, for the fact that Gildersleeve was played on television by Willard Waterman

Thanks for that. I’m not sure just how I"ve managed to conflate memories of Billy Gilbert,Willard Waterman and Harold Peary over the years, but I have. :o

Thanks, Eve, for that footage. I had to wait a fortnight for it to load on my slow dialup, then woke back up,(check postime), but, Wow! That gal is incredible. Every move was so beautifully come hither, great arm moves and subtle tone, then fanning flames, even aside from The Dress. And The Dress is the ultimate perfection of feminine definition of form. I don’t think the like has been seen since. Loved the Thinker at the end.

And, really loved the eyebrow dramatics of the male actors. Eyebrow raising needs to make a comeback.

So, Thelma Todd, Lyda and Jean Harlow, platinum blondes who died very young. Maybe it really was something in the hair dye…okay, Thelma was supposedly gassed, but let’s not let facts stand in our way.

Eve, any comments? Any famous brunettes die young?

By the way, check out Thelma’s prolific career–and she died at thirty!

Oh, Jiminy Crickets, where do I start? Clarine Seymour, Olive Thomas, Virginia Rappe, Barbara La Marr, Martha Mansfield, Tessie Harron, Myrtle Gonzales, Mary Thurman, Alma Rubens, Renee Adoree, Lucille Ricksen . . . and those are just off the top of my head, from the silent era!

Didn’t see Gilbert first time around, but spotted Vernon Dent immediately.

Dent appeared in dozens of Three Stooges shorts, usually at the recieving end of a pie or something.
