The Lucksmiths is one of my favourite bands - they’re based in Melbourne and play some awesome and very Aussie folk-pop. One of my favourite things about them are the intelligent and witty lyrics of their songs.
An ongoing source of disagreement between myself and a fellow fan has been the following lines:
“And for a moment I’m amazed
I ever claimed to hate this place.”
What do you think it means? As in, does the singer actually hate the place? I’m not going to mention what I think yet.
I think he has a love/hate relationship with the place. As in, you can want to leave the town you grew up in, and say that you hate it, but sometimes if you return you recognize how beautiful or wonderful it is. Or sometimes, things you never noticed before can jump out at you and make you recognize the beauty of a humdrum place. I’ve never heard the song, though, so I’m really just going of those lines provided.
If you don’t want to click around the website, the full lyrics are here. You know, so you can look at them in context.
I have no idea what it means, but the Lucksmiths are pretty good. It sounds like he’s singing about a place that used to be rather shady (Tourists, where once were prostitutes) and now isn’t.
