Did the lyrics to The Sailor’s Hornpipe – “I never, never, ever do a thing about the weather, because the weather never did a thing about me” – originate with Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (the Dodo’s song) or did the words predate the movie?
I have a memory of Popeye singing those lines… Would Popeye have sung a “Disney” song?
Sailor’s Hornpipe is an old traditional song. It goes back to the 1700s.
Popeye was using part of the song before the Alice in Wonderland movie. But the Alice in Wonderland Lyrics were written for Alice in Wonderland.
I knew the music was old; I’m just not getting (and I’m sorry, I’m confused by your answer) whether the “never never ever do a thing about the weather” lyrics were written for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, or go back before.
Sorry, those lyrics were written for Alice in Wonderland. If Popeye ever used them, I didn’t know it.
I’ve heard other lyrics, but I’ve also literally been to Sea Shanty Seminars and Sessions. They were probably just lyrics the Shanty men made up themselves or their friends did.
I don’t recall any other published lyrics.
Cool! Thanks! Most of the lyrics are kinda plain, but the “weather” quip is actually funny!
