M*A*S*H hometowns

My dad lived in Mill Valley for a while as a small child. My grandfather was in the Army, so they moved around a lot.

In 1985, my family went on a vacation trip to California. San Fransisco was one of the stops and we drove by my dad’s house in Mill Valley. It’s a humble little bungalow probably worth millions today. Back in the 1950s, my grandparents probably paid less than what a cheap used car costs today.

Oh, and both my parents went to college in Bloomington/Normal, IL. When I was in sixth grade, my dad and I took a trip by Amtrak from Austin to Chicago. We passed through Bloomington, but I didn’t get off the train. My dad did because he’s a smoker and Bloomington was a smoke stop. Even as a sixth grader, I had the sense not to smoke and not to stand on a train platform in the freezing cold.

If only someone mentioned that almost two years ago in post #43

4/11. I suck.

About Crabapple Cove, ME: It should get an honorable mention that there is a Penobscot Bay and Penobscot River in Maine. You will recall Margaret’s fiancé and short-lived husband was Donald Penobscot.

101 goes right through Mill Valley.

When BJ returned from the war, he and Peg moved to Stinson Beach, west of Mill Valley and right on the coast.

Bonus bonus trivia: McLean Stevenson’s mother’s maiden name was McLean. She was descended from the county’s founder. He was given the middle name of McLean, which he used as his first name professionally.

Bonus bonus bonus trivia: his second cousin was 2-time presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson III. He worked on his campaign staff as a young man.
