Mac AirPort question: Why can't I connect to my wireless network?

So I got a new MacBook Pro, and I’m trying to connect it to my home network wirelessly. The interface is a bit simplistic compared to what I’m used to on PCs I’ve hooked up to the wireless network before, and it’s got me stumped about what I’m supposed to do. Here’s what I’ve tried:

  1. Turn AirPort on.
  2. Select appropriate network from list.
  3. It comes up with a password type drop-down, in which only one choice is available (WPA Personal). This is wrong, but I enter the network password anyway.
  4. Get a message that it can’t connect to the network.
  5. Try this a couple more times, and every once in awhile (though I have not figured out how this occurs) the password type changes to WEP (which is correct). Excited, I enter the password again.
  6. Get a message that it either can’t connect to the network or that it can’t find the network.

Every once in awhile I get a couple of little black bars on the Airport icon, indicating that it’s connecting to something, but I can’t get on the net with it and it quickly goes back to zero bars.

I know the network password is correct because I’ve hooked up three other PC laptops to the network using it. I had problems with one of them but eventually it just started working with no prompting from me. I still don’t know why. Oh, and I’ve gotten another Mac onto the network wirelessly quite awhile back, so I don’t think it’s a Mac thing. I don’t have that one anymore, though, so I can’t check the settings.

I’m not a Mac guru–is there someplace I can go (configuration settings somewhere) where I can enter this WEP password and hopefully get on the net? Is there a trick to it that I don’t know about?

Thanks in advance! Dragging a 50-foot net cable from upstairs to downstairs is annoying and way too tempting a target for my cats.

Okay, now I feel a little silly.

Right after I posted this, somebody I’d ask previously sent me a fix, and darned if it didn’t work. So I guess I don’t need this thread after all. Mods, if you could delete it, that would be cool. Thanks!
