I bought a new keyboard for the iMac, and it works fine. So the problem in the other thread is solved. Here’s a new one.
My iMac G3 has an AirPort wireless card in it, and is running on OS X. When I try to join the network it asks for the password. I enter the password and it says it is incorrect. I tried entering it with caps on and caps off. I opened the AirPort Admin Utility on my PowerBook and clicked on Configure and Password. I checked the WPA Password, and it is what I’m entering on the iMac. I tried logging in again to no avail.
One more data point: When I originally installed the AirPort card about a year ago I only had dial-up. I hooked the phone cord into the AirPort and was able to connect the iMac that way. My PowerBook is connected to the cable modem through the AirPort (obviously, since you’re reading this), and roomie’s PC connects. It seems the iMac, now attempting to connect to the cable internet through the AirPort, just doesn’t like the correct password.
Just pulled up Internet Connect, and there is only the one network showing when I click the down arrow on Network. AFAIK there are no other wireless networks nearby.
Thanks for the quick response. I need to go away for an hour or so, but I’ll be back.
Go to the Access Control tab. If there are no listings, then the base station is set to allow all clients.
Also, check the WPA settings. Under the AirPort tab, click “Change Wireless Security” and check the “Encryption Type” setting. The default is “WPA and WPA2”. If it is set to “WPA2 only”, the iMac might not be able to connect if its AirPort software is not up to date.
You might try setting up a new password (WPA) on the airport base station, and update all of the wireless clients with the new password. If all else fails, reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure it.
My only other suggestion is to try manually specifying the connection. Choose “Other…” from the AirPort menu and type in the network name, choose “WPA Personal” or “WPA2 Personal” (try both) for Wireless Security, and type in the password.
Okay, I chose ‘Other’ and manually typed in the network name. I chose WPA Personal. I don’t remember seeing WPA2, though there were other options with 128-bit encryption, HEX, and something else. I couldn’t enter the password for those.
Before this, I changed the password in Admin. After trying to log on several times, I rebooted the iMac. Same message: ‘There was an error logging onto the network’. Oh – I also tried changing the network name to the DHCP Client ID. Just checking.
Very strange. The iMac can see the AirPort. The network name is displayed as an option (the option) when I open Internet Connect, and I can choose it. But the correct password is not being accepted.
These are my options when I click Other in Internet Connect:
[ul][li]WEP Password[/li][li]WEP 40/128-bit hex[/li][li]WEP 40/128-bit ASCII[/li][li]LEAP[/li][li]________________ (that’s a separator line)[/li][li]WPA Personal[/li][li]WPA Enterprise[/ul][/li]
I didn’t bother to give the network a name, so it’s the default Apple Network 98e1fc. Then I enter the correct password (which I’m not going to tell you – as if you’d be within range!). When I hit OK I get this message: There was an error joining the AirPort network “Apple Network 98e1fc”.
When I open AirPort Setup Assistant I have two options: Set up your computer to join an existing AirPort netork, and Set up an AirPort Base Station. I want to do the former, and I don’t want to do the latter on the iMac. When I click Continue I’m told that the network is password protected, so I enter the password. 'The Setup Assistant is now ready to configure your computer to access the network “Apple Network 98e1fc.” AirPort network settings will be made active. Continue. ‘The password you entered was incorrect. Please try again.’
Go to AirPort Admin Utility on the PowerBook. Click on the password. Yep, there it is. Type it v-e-r-y c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y… ‘The password you entered was incorrect. Please try again.’
Encryption was set to WPA and WPA2. I assumed that this meant that either WPA or WPA2 would work. Turns out that that is not the case. By switching to WPA only I was able to connect on the G3, and I’m also connected on the G4. I’ll have to tell roomie he needs to re-enter his password.
