Mac Question - Recent Documents Frozen

I’m running Mac OS 9 on an old iMac. On the Apple menu, the “Recent Documents” thing is frozen - it’s not updated itself in over a year. However, the “Recent Applications” thing is working fine.

Any thoughts on what’s happened to the “Recent Docs” thingie?

This has been a long time, but if I recall, these are shortcuts in a folder somewhere. I think it’s in “Recent Documents” which is in the “Apple Menu Items” which, in turn, is in the System folder. I would try locating this folder, then throwing all the shortcuts (NOT THE FOLDER ITSELF) in the trash. Then see if it starts acting normally again. I don’t know why this would happend, but it seems to me that a corrupted desktop database could cause odd things like this to happen, and rebuilding the desktop was a panacea for oddities like this. I had to google to remember how to do this, but according to The Essential Mac, you rebuild the desktop database by pressing Option and Apple while restarting the computer. A prompt will appear, asking you if you want to rebuild the desktop. Click OK, and wait for it to finish.

Huh? A Malfunctioning Mac?

Last I heard Macs don’t do that.

All that, and there’s also the Apple Menu Options Control Panel. It’s found in the Control Panels submenu of the Apple Menu. It lets you set the number of recent docs and apps to show. It may have gotten set to zero, or turned off.
