Mac techie question...

Sorry to post this very specific to me question, but I don’t know who to ask (short of being put on hold for an hour and a half by a apple operator who charges by the minute just to tell me just to rebuid my desk top).
Anyways… I downloaded the new version of Macster and it’ll run just swell on any computer but mine it seems(tried it at work, friends).
When I try to start it on mine, however, I get an alert saying I’m missing the file “Iconservices–ReleaseIconRef” Now I’ve asked all the computer nerds I know this question and they all just kinda glaze over. Anybody here in the know?
I’ve got a Powermac 6500, by the way and it ran the previous version of Macster no problemo.
Incidently, I’ve read all the forums on the (im)morality of this program, so please save me the flames.
Thanks ahead of time for any help offered.

What the heck is macster, and why is it immoral?

As for your problem, compare your working system with the non-working system. If you use Extensions Manager, get a list of all active and inactive extensions on both systems and compare. Compare versions of MacOS. If your version of MacOS has that “System Configuration info” thingie (IIRC, it’s in the apple menu) get that and print it out. Look for differences.

If the error mentions a specific file, look for that file on the working system.

Other than that, you might want to find a macster specific discussion area for more details.

I still wanna know what it is, and I don’t wanna have to type it in google, 'cause that would take like 5 seconds.

I’d give my left buns-cheek for a Wally sig.

It’s the Mac version of Napster, the MP3-trading legal lightning rod.

So Douglips,
This is an extensions problem you think? I don’t think Macster uses any extensions… I could be wrong. I did have my computer bomb today because of an extension conflict (wacom tablet, oddly)… I just figured I’d reinstall the Wacom software.
I have OS 8.1, by the way, if that’s any help.

Just input the name of the file in your browser search box. See what comes up. This came up for me for The one you gave:
Available in CarbonLib 1.0 and later when IconServicesLib 8.5 or later is installed. Exported by
CarbonLib 1.0 and later and by IconServicesLib 8.5 and later.

Okay, wild-ass guess, since I’m not familiar with that filename, but…the name of the file it claims it’s missing looks similar to libraries inside MacOS Runtime for Java. Download the latest MRJ and install it; see if that helps.

Are you running OS 8.5 or above, or something earlier? Macster requires an additional lihrary file (avail. on their web site) if you intend on running it under 8.1 etc.

Disable Similes in this Post

Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions, unfortunately I wasn’t able to check anything till today because my server went out as well (grrr)
Anyways, I updated my MacOS Runtime for Java, still had no effect. And I also have already installed the neccesary extension needed for my 8.1 OS. I am so frustrated. Wrote an email to Macster, no response of course. I even went out and bought Conflict Catcher over the weekend to see if maybe there was a problem there (didn’t solve anything, naturally).

Anyone else have any troubleshooting sugestions?
How about a knowedgeable help line # I could call that wouldn’t charge 30 bucks and keep me on hold for an hour just to tell me to reboot my computer? I’d pay a fee if I thought I’d talk to someone who could actually help me.

They have some great boards there, where asking such a question will be read by a plethora of Mac geeks. With any luck, one of them will know the answer!

What an incredibly useful site!
