MacBook Pro update issue

A couple of weeks ago I tried to install an ‘important’ update on my MacBook Pro. I was warned that it must be plugged into the mains, and not to interrupt power until the update was complete. So it goes through its normal thing, and comes up with a grey screen with a little ‘progress circle’ in the middle. It was taking forever. I left the computer on when I went to bed, and I still had the same thing when I got up in the morning. So I rebooted. Everything seemed normal.

For the last several days my (Safari) browser seemed to be running slowly. I decided to restart. When I did this, I got a message that an update needed to install. I could Abort or Continue. Before I could click Abort, I was back that grey screen. I had to reboot.

Whatever the update is, it’s not installing. It might be causing my computer to run slowly. How do I cancel the installation?

The update is an EFI update - it is patching the boot ROM. This is why it must occur in the staged fashion. It is patching a security hole in the boot ROM that is worth fixing.

It may be possible to force a reloading of the update. This may fix the issues. Check here.

It is possible to root around and remove the pending update, but I would really try to get it to install cleaning.
