I’m struggling, and so of course I turn to the pros.
Macintosh. OS-X Jaguar. I use the default Mail software. I have an account with a local ISP where I live, they have local access numbers all over America. Fine and dandy.
Now, I add a second account name into the software. It’s seemingly close to Outlook Express in terms of what it looks like as I set things up. Pop3, SMTP, etc.
I have the accurate Incoming data line, and accurate Outgoing data line for this new account. It’s an email address for my new web site.
My PC can find that email just fine. My Mac is incapable of finding it, it says the server cannot be found. Why? Because- without my having typed it in- the OS has inserted information into the Outgoing data line. For example:
If my outgoing line should read
then my Mac has automatically made that line to read as follows:
**
Of course, that server does not exist, I don’t have a .mac email account.
It’s infuriating, of course. I rely on this laptop, and yet can not check the emails for my new address and web site? Folderol. What am I missing here?

Weird. I couldn’t duplicate your problem, but I’m still using 10.2. I have found that I can’t delete server names that I goofed in typing, but that’s a minor problem. Try http://discussions.info.apple.com/
You’ll need to register to post anything, but their archives may have a solution.
There’s also a wealth of knowledge (and friendliness) to be found at the MacMentor forums. They’re very much geared toward solving problems like this.
I can’t replicate the problem either, but I’m running Panther so that might be why… Couple of obvious questions-
-Is this just a standard POP account you’re trying to set-up?
-Just to clarify - you are unable to edit or add new outgoing mail servers to the account?
May I also suggest the Mail boards on the free Apple Support forums. Very useful…

Hello I’m back. Okay, so I didn’t exactly enter the proper lines of information for use with my local I.P.
Hard to pin down a problem when, the day after my Webmaster talks me through re-entering the account info into my TiBook, I travel out of town and find myself at a hotel that has access to my ISP’s servers blocked. I can DL emails on their free highspeed Internet in the room, but cannot send a blessed letter.
-sigh- I miss my fountain pen.
Just for future reference - One way to temporarily get around the problem of not having the right outgoing server info for your email program while you’re traveling is to use Mail2Web. The emails you send will have a small ad at the bottom, just like Hotmail does, and since it’s web-based you won’t have your usual .sig included (if you use one). However, anyone getting your mail will see the account you’re logged in under as the “From” address, and you can send attachments from your laptop. Simply reading your emails will not remove them from your email server, but just be aware that if you delete an email while accessing it through Mail2Web, you have just deleted it for all time.
I’ve used this service countless times to read mail from my Earthlink account, my company email account and my old university account, and it worked well with all of them. I can also vouch that using it does not dump you on anyone’s spam list.
