Mad Men 2.3: The Benefactor, Aug 10th '08 (open spoilers)

Tonight at 10pm.

Another excellent episode. God, I love this show. I need to check the AMC schedule and see what other times it’s on, because two viewings aren’t enough.

I’m confused by Betty. Is she crushing on the horse guy or not? Did she reject him out of sympathy for his fiancee? Maybe Betty she’s a bit of herself in Tara. I sure did.

Jimmy and Bobby Barrett were fun, in the “they deserve each other” way.

I hated to see Don fall off the wagon again. At least he had the grace to look ashamed when Betty gave him the watch.

What the hell was up with Don and Bobby there? She was utterly repellent, and clearly he thought so too, because the first thing he did upon getting home was wash his hands and rinse his mouth. But it paid off-- because he fucked her, he was able to sexually intimidate her and get her to make Jimmy apologize. That scene with his hand up her skirt was creepy and I can’t believe it worked, but it did.

Betty, I think, wanted the attention from the horse guy, but didn’t want to have to actually put out, just like with the tow truck guy. Just to prove she still has it, maybe, since Don isn’t showing as much interest? I thought it was a little sad, that she thought that Don had “included her” in his life by using her as bait to pacify Jimmy at dinner. She’s getting kind of pathetic.

Why DO they pay Ken Cosgrove more than Harry and Sal? He’s such an obnoxious jerk and it’s not clear to me what he does that makes him so worthwhile. I was sorry to see Harry cave in though he knew Roger was lying when he said, “$300 a week? No one around here makes $300!”

Loved this episode. I felt sorry for Lois, but she really was in over her head. She always had that deer-in-the-headlights look about her.

The whole “Defenders” thing was interesting. According to IMDb, the episode “Benefactor” (same title as this episode of “Mad Men”) aired in March, 1962. There’s no synopsis, but I think it’s the one they were watching. What was that weird moment between the Belle Jolie guy and Sal as they were leaving the room?

Did anyone recognize the movie Don went to? He seems to be becoming a closet intellectual.

The Belle Jolie guy is same guy Sal went to dinner with in S1, the guy who tried to get Sal out of the closet,

Me again. The movie is La Notte. I haven’t seen it. The IMDB description mentions a wife flirting with someone her husband wants to impress. And yeah, the episode of The Defenders is the one they were watching.

Rubystreak, I don’t get Don boinking Bobby. Like you said, she was repellent. She commented on his hard on, so maybe we’re supposed to think he did it because he could. But it could also be Don going the extra mile to help save the Utz account. I’m going with the hard on – Don has too much ego to let himself be used like that.

Excellent episode! I find it weird that Don was able to get it up for Bobbie but wasn’t able to for Betty…hmm. Whiskey dick? Performance anxiety?

And I’m glad to see Don trying to straighten his butt out, but I’ve got the feeling that an illegitimate child is going to be showing up soon.

Isn’t Sal head of the art department? If so he should be making more than $300/wk. I guess either Ken is good at negotiating his salary or he has some sort of “in” at SC. Maybe Dad’s a buddy of Bert?

Didn’t Harry ask for $310?

I’m looking forward to seeing how the TV division does. I thought Harry’s concept of getting Bell Jolie to sponsor the show was pretty innovative. Controversy = ratings = money.

He asked for that, and Roger said no one makes even close to that, take $225. And Harry did, knowing that Ken makes $300, so Roger was bullshitting him.

I wonder who Don’s new secretary will be… and what she’s going to bring to the mix.
