Season 6 starts tonight at 9pm with a 2 hour episode, The Doorway, which involves Christmas decorations and location shots in Hawai’i. To sum up where we left of last season; Roger & Jane divorced, Megan’s foray into advertising was a failure & she’s back to acting, Don was tempted to cheat on her, Pete cheated on Trudy several times and now has a pied-à-terre in the city (which he got by lying to Trudy), Joan is a junior partner (& apparently took Lane’s job), Lane is dead, and Peggy is working at another company and living in sin with her Jewish boyfriend. Did I miss anything? Anybody else wonder what a Talking Deadesque after show would be like for Mad Men?
Loved it. Heck, I don’t even need to watch it to know.
This is great. Long overdue!!
Hawaii? Really? That’s usually a sure indicator that a show has run out of ideas.
The late 60s was the prime years for Hawaii as being an exotic vacation getaway, so it does make sense that Don & Megan might take a sojourn there.
And a nitpick about your summary alphaboi867, Megan showed herself to be surprisingly adept at her ad job, she just gave it up for her girlhood ambition of being an actress, a job she was less successful at. At least, she wasn’t instantly getting parts and therefore felt she was a failure.
Also I’d add - the agency hired a new copy writer Ginsberg, who demonstrated that he was talented and ambitious and anxious to make a mark for himself - something that threatened the somewhat older Don. Betty was suffering from malaise depression and gained a ton of weight and was jealous of Don’s new life and new (younger, skinnier) wife. Sally carried on a secret ‘friendship’ with the creepy (former) neighbor kid. Roger is also seeking enlightenment (or the closest proximity to it) through LSD. Kinsey went west to become a writer for “Star Trek.” Harry was as much of a goon as ever. Sal is still MIA.
Lol. I have the same copy of “Dante’s Inferno” on my bookshelf!
Still the sexiest man on TV.
Well, Betty, that got dark in a hurry.
No shit. Jesus.
Roger is one callous S.O.B.
Still, it was really funny.
“I just want you to be yourself.” Talk about opening a can of worms. Nice they finally confirmed what everyone already thought about Peggy’s backstory (though her mother doesn’t strike me as the type to marry outside the Church, unless she had to ;)).
That comment just took on a double meaning.
Going to have to record it from now on. All the self-adoration commercials by AMC are really annoying.
The episode either wasn’t all that well written, or perhaps just not very well edited. I guess they figured it’s been so long that they had to reintroduce all the characters, which was true to some extent, but it dragged. I was actually surprised to see Betty come back, as her story arc seemed to have nowhere to go. It still doesn’t, really. That whole story line with the violin player was completely unnecessary, IMO, and I don’t give a damn about the kids or her new husband, or her husband’s family, or her, for that matter. Is January Jones pregnant or just looking matronly? They seem to be trying to make her less. . .frigid or something, but I’m not buying it.
Roger still has all the best lines, and Peggy is somewhat interesting in her new job as the female Don Draper. Roger bursting into tears over the shoeshine kit was predictable. The memorial for his mother was very funny.
WTF was her “do you want me to hold her while you rape her” joking about?
In fact nothing Betty did tonight made much sense. And I missed something: how did she know to go to that abandoned tenement when looking for the girl?
Have we seen Don’s new other-woman before?
"it’s my funeral’ will go down as one of Roger’s all-time best lines.
Sally seems a little too much the sarcastic teenager. Kiernan Shipka did a good job acting, but her character came off as a little too obnoxious.
Have we ever seen Don strike out out so badly with a concept as the “Jumping Off” campaign with Sheraton?
Finally, I think the Koss Super Bowl campaign a “Super Bowl” ad like it was so, so important is a little anachronistic. A quick search of Wikipedia says that Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt referred to the NFL-AFL championship as the Super Bowl during the merger negociations- but it seems like the name didn’t come into general usage until Super Bowl III [Jets-Colts] or maybe even Super Bowl IV [Chiefs-Vikings] Don’t recall Super Bowl ads being really important until Apple’s “1984” ad.
That whole conversation made no sense to me. Not sure if it is January Jones’ poor acting, or what.
Sandy very specifically mentioned wanting to go to St Mark’s Place in her earlier conversation with Betty.
And what was up with Roger’s hair when visiting his shrink?
Conrad Hilton hated Draper’s ideas. Maybe Don needs to stay away from hotel accounts.
Why can’t funerals be that entertaining in real life? Was it just me, or is the firm still SCDP? :dubious: Did they keep Pryce in the name just to piss Pete off?
Sterling Cooper Draper… Pete?

It’s like there’s a bit of him still hanging around the office.
Had they mentioned Roger’s grandson before?
It’s the doctor’s wife.
