Mad-Men: 5.09 "Dark Shadows" (open spoilers)

The other cast members must be jealous of Roger getting all the good lines. The paper route remark was brilliant. As was the Fiddler on the Roof comment.

Bitter Betty just might take an overdose pretty soon. Loved they way they had her wowed by Don’s apartment, and then she has to go back to that mausoleum they live in.

Seems like everything’s a competition with Ginsberg, with everyone, and he’s becoming more and more annoying. I liked Stan putting him into his place after Ginsberg’s “Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair” line: “You should read the rest of that poem, you boob”. Stan’s sharp and educated but doesn’t need the constant attention like Ginsberg.

Ginsberg doesn’t strike me as overly competitive or attention-seeking. He was right to be annoyed that Ken et al. didn’t present his work, especially since he was right about why. He is very driven and works very, very hard, which has led to him becoming prolific at SCDP in a short time, and he’s very odd, but if anything he seems less relentless and single-minded than someone like Peggy.

Regarding Stan, he seems to have calmed down some since Peggy put him in his place last season, but at his worst he’s basically a cruder version of Kinsey - a pretentious jerk.

I wonder, are they setting up some kind of arc in which Betty realizes she’s a lesbian? Something like that would really be out of left field, I think, so maybe I’m just misinterpreting.

During one of the Weight Watchers meeting, she made some kind of comment about how it had been a bad week because she saw things that made her feel a way she hadn’t felt before - I’m paraphrasing, I don’t remember the exact words. But it made me wonder what she was referring to, and if it had something to do with her catching a glimpse of Megan getting dressed.

I think it’s that it was the first time she felt jealous of another woman’s figure.

Are you thinking that because of how Betty stared at Megan undressing? If so, that had nothing to do with lust and everything to do with Megan being thin.

Betty looked at Megan and thought, “That used to be me.” That is a bad moment for any woman, especially when YOU’RE the ex. Now if you’re the new young thang and the *ex *is the porker… *that *is sweet.

I’m not clear HOW Betty saw Megan. The doorway the Megan emerged from appeared to be around the corner from where Betty was standing and I can’t picture a way that a mirror in the living room could reflect into the bedroom or bath. Do they have a window between the bedroom and living room? And why didn’t Megan see Betty standing there? Our instincts are trained to easily recognize a human in our peripheral vision.

Not only that, Betty divorced Don before Megan even came into the picture. She can’t even tell herself that she hates Megan because she’s a homewrecker; all she can think of is how Megan is younger, prettier, more worldly, etc than her and that’s why she hates her.

Anyone else notice that Bluto wasn’t present at Thanksgiving dinner? A broken ankle isn’t that bad, so either she’s in much worse shape, or she just went to one of her other kids (does Henry even have any siblings ) houses.

At this point Ginsberg is the most creative person there, by a lot. His folder was full of ideas, and he responded to Don that he didn’t mind Don not showing his idea because he has a lot of them. Even the younger Don didn’t churn out ideas like that. Ginsberg is also used to being discriminated against in the ad business, as Roger clearly showed. He’s going to be able to pull them into the new cultural world - if he stays.

It looks like the living room and bedroom have sliding doors or large windows that are at right angles to each other, perhaps opening onto a balcony. She saw Megan through two sets of windows.

Betty was looking out the windows/patio doors in the living room at the view of the city when she glanced over and saw through the window into the bedroom. I assumed the apartment wall did an “L” with the bedroom window and the patio doors at 90 degrees from one another. She either saw Megan directly or saw her reflected in a mirror in the bedroom.

I think they left her out because her hulking frame would have upset the Rockwellian symmetry of the dinner table scene.

Gee, Sally better stop wandering the hallways at night then. She could become even more disillusioned about the sexual habits of adults.

That layout would cause a lot of embarrassment at most parties that I’ve attended, but I’m sure it was just a point of convenience for the TV show.

Plus, Betty used to be a model, and now, she ain’t.

People undress a lot at most of the parties you’ve attended? We should hang out more.

It’s not uncommon at all for a very nice city apartment or condo to have multiple doors or windows leading to the balcony from both the living area and the master bedroom.

And her comment at the WW meeting, as I stated in my post.

But I see, based on other comments in addition to yours, that I had indeed misinterpreted.

I’d assume that, if Megan is expecting strange people to be wandering her home, she makes sure to close the blinds/curtains.

My mom had that food scale when I was a kid (that was the 80’s, but she’d probably had it for ages.) I remember when she used to do Weight Watchers and it was MISERABLE. I do it now and it’s a completely different thing. (Plus, when I’m paying attention I lose two pounds a week, suck it half pound grapefruit eaters of the past!)

What were those cubes? Cheese? With grapefruit?
