Mad-Men: season 6 premiere (open spoilers)

She was the doctor’s wife.

I got the impression that the PFC traded lighters with Don “accidentally on purpose”; his mentioning that he believes what goes around comes around indicating he hoped to be in Don’s shoes some day. Don, recalling the circumstances of his own switch, may have been fearful that it was time to pay the piper, saw the lighter switch as ominous, and try to throw it away, only to have it returned. He definitely has his own mortality on his mind (as does Roger), asking the doorman what his near death experience was like, and presenting that bizarre ad.

:smack:

You’re right. That’s what I get for posting right before bed.

I wonder if we’ll find out how Don and Dinkins “got in trouble” together the rest of the night, or is it meant to be a blackout moment.

Also, was it just me or were Joan’s breasts even larger than last season?

Did Don’s proposed ad for the Royal Hawaiian remind anyone else of the title sequence for the show, with the man falling out of the office building?

what? Margaret Sterling, played by Elizabeth Rice, is Roger’s daughter.

That’s exactly what I said to my husband.

Already been corrected a few posts upthread. I had meant to write “doctor’s wife” but got mixed up somehow. Linda Cardellini was Sylvia, the woman Don’s now sleeping with.

Her character is likely currently breastfeeding, so they probably made them look even bigger than normal on purpose.

Yes. I pointed that out upthread.

Vincent K. who plays Pete said he failed to put on 25 lbs. for his role this year as he did previously. Maybe Pete lost weight staying weekdays in his city apartment, away from Trudy’s home cooking.

Joan IS much bigger! She has a wonderful hourglass figure, but there’s so much of it!

Two questions: what do you suppose it meant when Don was standing in his office before his photo, ‘hearing’ the sound of the Hawaiian surf?

Why did Roger flip out when his ex-wife brought her new husband to the mother’s funeral? Was there some bad feeling or was he just on edge with the strain?

I had assumed from all the whacky facial hair and Ken’s new hairdo that there was a bit of a time skip between seasons again. Although maybe the show is going with a Joan-breastfeeds-her-kid-into-puberty storyline…

Yes, there was a time skip; the previous episode was set in April 1967 and this one was at Christmas later that year.

We left off in the April of '67 and pick up right around Christmas of the same year. I think it’s the shortest gap between seasons Mad Men has had yet.

And as Sepinwall notes, we skip over the Summer of Love though it’s referenced a few times. I imagine the new facial hair, especially on the younger guys, is a result of that big social shift.

She might still be breastfeeding but it is relatively unlikely. The baby from last season (unless there was some mention of a new one that I missed) would be about 19/20 months old now (born before Memorial day 1966, start of last season, and it is now January 1968).

But by the mid-60s, according to this, less than 25% of mothers even starting breastfeeding and less than 10% were breastfeeding at 6 months. I don’t recall if last season ever gave any indication one way or the other on whether Joan was breastfeeding.

Regardless, though, if she is still breastfeeding she would have been breastfeeding throughout the previous season so it wouldn’t make sense for them to be bigger now.

I just thought she was further highlighting them for the PR photography.

That could be. Could also just be a new line of bras making them look a bit more enhanced.

How do we know Don is having an affair? I heard that blond woman (whom I thought was the wife of the other man at the party, not the doctor, who I think had the brunette wife) say that she might slip out of her clothes in the elevator, and Don kind of raised his eyebrows at that . . . was there another scene I missed entirely?

It would seem so. The doctor gets a phone call and he needs to leave for the hospital. Don walks him down and watches him leave. then goes up to a door, softly knocks and the Dr’s (brunette) wife lets him in where they wind up in bed. Doesn’t seem to have been their first time.

Eventually Don returns home, gets into bed and Megan snuggles up with him. The blonde was something of a false lead there.

I thought it was a decent start to the season. It’s setting a lot of stuff up. I loved seeing Peggy settled in nicely at her job. She’s the young Don Draper in a way, in that she’s the one people look up to, but she actually seems happy, unlike Don.

I was thrown by that too. I rewound my recording to make sure I didn’t miss anything, then realized what was going on.

That was Stan, who Peggy used to work with at SCDP. They were friends, though I don’t remember how close.

Ah. Thanks. Where in the ep was this scene?

It was after the New Year’s party so towards the very end but I don’t recall if there was anything after it.
