made in China

My dad seems to feel that with this melee going on with China, folks are going to protest by not buying products made in China.
What if veryone did?
Would if affect our economy badly?
China’s?

Well, I’d be out of a job. I owe my high-flying tech-job living to some underpaid schmuck living in some company barracks in Shanghai make computer parts in a factory for five cents and hour, all of which he has to mail back to the hinterland to provide food for his starving unemployeed relatives. Thanks, schmuck!

I actually don’t think it’s physically possible for a consumer to go the total “Made in the U.S.A.” route anymore. Wal-Mart gave it a good shot, but as soon as Sam Walton died, they went right for the “Made in China” labels. Just looking around my dining room here at all my material goods (shoes, clothes, dishes, etc.) I’d have difficulty picking out the stuff that wasn’t made in China.

Anything you want to buy, chances are good that it’s Made in China. Whatcha gonna do? [shrug]

What advantage does China have, I wonder? There’s Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Taiwan, and South Korea, to name a few, and I haven’t even gotten out of Asia yet.
Seems to me China rates the same as Dilbert did with his girlfriend, a 10…

for how many seconds it would take to find a country that could replace it and its products.

It’s true that American corporations could find new places to place their ‘production facilities’ if China wasn’t a viable option, but I don’t see how you would go about organizing a massive boycott of everything that’s made in China. Let’s face it: most American’s are not too interested in altering their own consumer habits for any political cause, and their isn’t much consensus that China is an ‘evil empire’ anyway.

I’ve been doing my best to avoid buying goods that were made in China for a number of years now. But since so many products are made in China and I don’t always think to check before I buy I don’t always stick to the boycott. I don’t remember which news program, on ABC I think, but some of the profits made by Chinese companies go straight to the PLA. And I certainly don’t want to support an army I might be shooting at one day.
