Good goddess. If you listen closely enough you can hear her bones creaking! Actually she doesn’t so much look old as she looks haggard.
(I love the look on the faces of the kids who say “Where you get them jay-eens?!” too…They are trying so hard not to crack up. At least Missy Elliot has the sense to cover them up with about a dozen layers of clothing.)
My friend and I were watching TV, and we saw that commercial (specifically when Missy Elliot comes out) we decided we wanted nothing more than to have a giant t-shirt with our face on it, so we can be as cool as Missy Elliot. So were going to the Gap to see if they have them in stock.
Thing that confuses me about this commercial is why they teamed Madonna up with Missy “shut the hell up” Elliot.
I mean do the marketing folks at Gap think that Madonna is such a relic that they need to team her up with a third rate rapper to make a successful commercial? I mean, christ, if you need to team her up with someone, and if that someone needs to be a black, female, rap artist, frickin’ pony up the bucks and get Queen Latifah, would ya?
I think it’s more to do with shooting for the African American demographic. Seriously, when I was in college I took a couple of advertising/marketing classes and in one we had a guest lecturer with the head of the company that holds the Gap account - based in Phoenix I believe. This was at the time when Gap had switched from it’s “fall in to the Gap” musical campaign (aerosmith, lucious jackson, LL cool J) to it’s matrix style dancey dancey commercials.
When the floor was open to questions, one African American student asked the guy why Gap was moving away from commercials that appealed to him, and ad guy was stumped.
While you may not think Missy is as big a name as queen latifah she certainly is to a lot of people - Queen Latifah is more of an acctress these days.
Madonna hits the young but not teen demographic pretty well. I went to a Madonna concert with my girlfriend (now wife) in Philly a couple of years ago and the whole audience seemed to consist of younger women and gay guys.
I thought Madonna looked hot then.
Well…one thing about the ad that really urks me is at the -very- end when Missy does the splits and Madonna says “I can do that too!” And goes into a million times over better split than Missy’s. sigh Just because she has a great dance background doesnt mean that she could steal the spotlight from Ms Elliot. I mean really…we all know that Madonna can do that. I for one didnt know that Missy could do that! remembers point…stops babbling Madonna is a show-stealer.
But other than that, I like the ad. I dont know if I would buy the clothes…but I like the ad.
And keithnmick, youre right about the whole Madonna aimed at white Gap buyers (17-29 yr old women) and Missy Elliot aimed at African American Gay buyers (also 17-29…). Yeah. I thought they made a wise decision to go with those two
