Mafia Championships -- Nomination Thread

Thank you for posting this, Thing Fish!

I’ve been a bit busy, but I’m here now and will make sure to check in regularly. If you guys have any questions, just let me know.

I’ll bump this in case anyone didn’t notice it.

I’ll continue taking nominations another few days, but so far it seems like the only candidates receiving support comparable to Angel’s are Chronos and TexCat. I just PMed them to ask to confirm or deny their interest.

I’m flattered, really, but have you guys seen my win-loss record? It’s underwater both as Town and Scum. I think the main reason is that my style differs enough from most other players’ that I tend to get lynched early, no matter my alignment. Now, that’s diminished as folks here have gotten used to me, but if you throw me in with a bunch of strangers…

I’ll also note that, while I like all-vanilla games, the format they’re proposing is seriously biased towards Scum. I make it a less than 1 in 4 chance for Town.

That said, if you really want me to, I’ll take the job.

As for my nominees: Given that Scum bias, I think that we ought to send our best Scum player, for the best chance of winning the championships. Off the top of my head, Storyteller, Drain Bead, and TexCat are all very good at playing Scum.

^^^^ This.

I don’t have time right now to do this justice.

I’m ready, willing and able to do it, or to serve as Chronos’ alternate if he prefers. I will note for those of you that don’t really know me that I’m a good player as Town but my real skill lies in playing Scum. I’m unsure if the setup favors Scum whether it pays to send a stronger Town player or a stronger Scum player.

And the only game I’ve lost as scum in three years was the one in which Dante won as an SK so I absolutely second his nomination.

Wow, thanks for this nomination guys. I’ll have to think about this though, considering the complexity of championship type game settings.

But seriously, thanks alot.

I vote for the Queen of Scum, Angel!

My reasoning for sending a strong Scum player: The champion of each game is probably going to come from the winning team. The winning team is probably going to be Scum. If we send a player who’s good at playing Town, then they’re going to either be on the losing team, and thus not get picked, or are going to be on the winning team but not put their skills to good use, and thus still not get picked.

DanteG, it looks like the rules, at least, won’t be complicated: They’re going all-vanilla this year. Or did you mean the social complexity of playing with a bunch of strangers who are all highly skilled?

Yeah, I see that the rules are basic. All Vanilla roles and such. The hard part for me is going to be using my own smarts to figure things out in a group of new players. Sifting thru so many posts a day is also going to be tough.

Personally, as happy as I am that some of you chose me, I say send someone better skilled. I tend to do better as Scum and as Town, I really only do well if I have some kind of power. The SK win was a shining moment, sure, but not sure if it ranks up their with more strategic and analytical players like Angel, Texcat or SNF.

Sidetrack: Chronos, do you really think 12-3 is unbalanced in favor of scum? I would tend to think the opposite if anything.

As a former player, definitely make sure you have plenty of time for this one. Also do your best

Holy crap! People nominated me? ME?! I’m flattered, thank you, but no. I’m not ready. Maybe next year. Maybe after I’ve modded a game or two, which I am also not ready to do.

Although it is true that something like 13 of the 17 qualifying games last year were won by scum (though the final was a town rout).

So, of the leading contenders, it seems like Angel is enthusiastic and Chronos is more ambivalent. Can we get a consensus for sending Angel, with Chronos as her alternate, or does anyone feel we should take a formal vote?

That’s not what I think; it’s a calculated result. With 12 Townies vs. 3 Scum, and assuming equal skill on both sides, Town has an exactly 0.245221 chance of winning. Most of that is from the parity problem: An odd total number of players favors Scum. If one Townie were to die for no reason in that setup (bringing the total number of players even), Town’s chances would actually improve to 0.387695. Even with an even total number of players, you need 19 Town to actually have an even shot against 3 Scum, and with an odd total, you need a whopping 40.

I’m down with that plan.

If this or some other pairing gets confirmed, could you send me a PM?

Seconded.

I just checked and it looks like I’m registered over there already as Archangel- that’s the name I use on most sites. (Just an FYI that it may make sense to submit me under that name.)

Yay! Come on over and say hi, if it’s all decided but the formalities.

Thingyman, what do you want me to PM you about?
