I haven’t played Magic: The Gathering in over 10 years. I picked up a 9th Edition Core set at Target, and began playing the game with my wife. We picked up most of the rules fairly easy. The decks in the Core set each have 33 cards, but I seem to remeber when I played all those years ago, that each player had a deck with 60 cards. Am I remembering correctly? How many cards should be in each players deck?
The “official” minimum is 40 cards. Most pre-built deck tornaments have 60-card minimums.
You could try drawing from the same library (deck).
the decks in the core set are specifically for beginners. Note that there should be a 14-card pack with more advance cards included. After you get the hang of it, I think you’re supposed to split those cards between the two decks to make two 40-card, legal decks.
(40-card is the minimum for the rules, but usually only used for “limited” play, which is when you open up some packs of cards and play with a subset of what you get. When you play “constructed” decks, building a deck from your whole collection, you generally use 60-card decks because that’s what’s done in tournaments.)
40 cards is very, very obsolete. 60 cards is the minimum for Constructed (i.e., built beforehand) play, and has been for many years. 40 cards is the minimum for Limited (i.e., you’re given a stack of cards (one way or another) and told to build a deck on the fly).
That said, when playing for fun, you can feel free to use whatever house rules you want, including deck size.
