I live in Timonium, which is just north of Baltimore. I distinctly remember the last huge cicada infestation. However, I am not at all sure how long ago it was. Is the current Brood II the same that caused a huge infestation in the past, or would that be Brood X which still has a lot of time to grow. The question is was the last huge infestation in my area in 1995 or 2003?
I am about 60 miles SW of Timonium so conditions here are probably similar to there. Brood II was last seen in 1996; I don’t remember the extent of the pestilence. I seem to remember an impressive swarm in 2004, which would have been Brood X. Brood X seems to have a muchlarger range than Brood II, although I don’t know if that correlates to higher local density.
Here’s a handy map (and cicada life cycle graphic) of the regional broods. It appears that Brood X is the big one for the B-W area.
Even though they are 8 years apart, I could not remember if the swarm was in 1996 or 2004. Seems like 2004 must have been the huge one. Too bad, I thought they were quite fun.
I’m about 30 miles south of Baltimore. I distinctly remember the cicadas here and in downtown Baltimore in 2004. I presume that Timonium is also in the Brood X region.
I live in PA but work in MD. The Brood X region extends well up in to PA so it definitely includes Timonium. My company was in Columbia in 2004 and I remember the cicadas being very thick down there. For whatever reason, though, the northern side of Brood X was a bit spotty. Where I live in PA they were almost nonexistent. They were pretty thick on the Maryland side of the border but didn’t show up much at all in York County in PA.
From what I remember, Timonium was well inside the region where they showed up in pretty heavy numbers.
Thanks everyone. What I remember is an amount that was clearly Brood X. Sad that I couldn’t localize the date to within 8 years.
