I think it’s fascinating to watch Magnum P.I. and see the changing perception of masculine beauty. When’s the last time you saw a modern guy’s legs presented as a sexual object? (Particularly a fully-clothed modern guy?)
By fully clothed I do mean by 80’s standards, of course, as some of his shorts are a little frightening these days.
Hehe, or mustache’s and hairy chests. You don’t see many “hunks” with a mustache or a hairy chest any more.
It’s funny, my wife, who is not as into Magnum as I am, but who appreciates the show for what it is, always has to call attention to the chest and leg shots:
“And there it is, the-Magnum-has-his-shirt-off-shot! For the tenth time this episode.”
I’ve noticed in some of the earlier episodes that sometimes he appears to take his shirt for no good reason, just so they could get a chest shot in.
“Boy, he sure does change his shirt a lot. Not that I mind anyway.”
I wouldn’t say frightening myself. And hey, he had great legs! Like EJsGirl I just plain liked Tom Selleck on Magnum and on Friends. I would have liked him to stay on Friends longer.
…I was thinking about this episode and this thread yesterday, wondering how realistic it would be to tread water for two days. Then this happened: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11242249/
Interesting story Banquet Bear. Two days is a long time to tread water. It’s believable, however. Magnum was in tip-top shape and was a former Navy SEAL. If anyone could do it, he could.
“Herman…No! Go away Herman!”
Great, great episode.
Hey, I have one more question for you guys:
What are some of the “fantasy” episodes? I remember Flashback, where Magnum is transported back to the 1930s(?), and I remember the “Indiana Jones” episode (Legend of the Lost Art(?)). I know there were a few more, what are they?
When we watched the show with my grandmother (who was a huge fan - she had a lifesized poster of Selleck in her bathroom, which startled me everytime I walked in there) we always counted how many times he took off his shirt. If she had been a drinking woman, I’m sure she would have made it into a drinking game.
Cha! I just noticed that hidden in that site, in an area seperate from the linked photo, are two super cool Robin’s Nest photo albums! One from ground level, and one from above! There are some really, really good pics in there! Apparently, the beach and surf in front of Robin’s Nest (aka “The Anderson Estate”) is open to the public. One guy commented that he reenacted the opening scene of the pilot, while his SO filmed. I must do that before I die.
It’s a shame that the property is in such disarray, however.
the plans were cancelled when Tom Sellack refused to release the rights to his likeness (for when Sam looked in the mirror, even tho the character of Thomas Magnum was the propertly of Donald Bellasario’s production company (the producers of Quantum Leap)
