Matthew McConaughey as Magnum PI?

According to this article, Matthew McConaughey has been offered the role of Thomas Magnum in a movie version of Magnum PI. I don’t like Matthew McConaughey in anything he’s done, he always comes across as a smarmy jerk, so who would you cast in the roles?

I can see Taye Diggs as TC, and Mark Wahlberg as Rick.

I can’t think of a good Higgins, except maybe Ian McShane.

Yes! McConaughey would be a PERFECT Magnum! I loved him in Sahara.

Yeah, I can see him as Magnum. This oughta be a hoot.

I think this could actually work. But Taye Diggs doesn’t have enough meat on him to be TC. I vote Ice Cube.

Uh … I really hate this “let’s remake an old TV show as a movie” thing. Take a chance on an original script! If I want to see Magnum PI again I’d rather watch the old series or see a new special made with the old stars in a sort of “where are they now” type thing.

“I think this scene would be a great opportunity to take my shirt off.”
I can’t stand how he’s the same character in every movie. I guess the solution is to write a script where the character is exactly like Matt M, then just cast him.

Ice Cube would be the most awesome TC ever. Not that I’d ever see a “new” Magnum movie.

What about Tom Selleck as Robin Masters? They could show him this time, as well as giving a nod to the original series. And if the “real” Magnum was in it, I might go see it. Otherwise no way.

I think MM would be horrible. Remember, Magnum used to be a military man who’s actually pretty smart and resourceful, and just chooses to be a beach bum.

MM can pull off the beach bum part, but I think he’d have a tough time believably conveying the rest of it.

Tom has said in interviews he’s not happy they’re making a movie, so I don’t see it happening.

While McConaughey could handle the goofy “let me con my friends into helping me out and pull some zany stunt on Higgins” Magnum, there’s no way he could handle the “stone cold Vietnam vet 2 years in a tiger cage” Magnum. Without the second, there’s no point in a movie.

But Ian McShane can’t be Higgins! Ian McShane is Private Clutterbuck!

McConaughey is getting to be the right age to play Magnum, but when would the movie be set? 1980s or today? If today, what war would Magnum be a veteran of? The “2 years in a tiger cage” was a big part of what made Magnum cool. I’m not sure that McConaughey has the gravitas to pull that off.

Maybe they are going for a parody, like they did with Starsky & Hutch. In which case, it is really going to suck.

And I really don’t think that McConaughey can grow the proper mustache for the role.
[Hercule Poirot] “Ze growing of Ze mustache, it is a fine art.” [/Hercule Poirot]

Personally, I think they should just hire John Hillerman, and do a movie about Higgins and his half-brothers.

I’ve read a few articles where Selleck said he didn’t want to be a part of it, but nothing in the article struck me as angry or bitter.

In fact, even when Selleck was attacked by Rosie O’Donnell for liking guns, he didn’t seem bitter.

This is surprising. Do you have a link handy for the article you read(not calling “cite” on you, just if you have it handy)?

Terrible. Aside from the “2 years in a Tiger cage” thing, another major part of Magnum’s character was that deep down he was a decent human being. I can’t see McConaughey deciding not to take advantage of a young naïve female client b/c it was the decent thing to do; I see him going “Alright alright alright” and sleeping with her anyway.

Calling cite on me is fine. It was in a magazine my wife was reading. I’ll see if I can still find it tonight. IIRC, he wasn’t angry or bitter, he just seemed to prefer that they didn’t make a Magnum movie, so “not happy” != “angry”.

OK, what’s this tiger’s cage deal that everyone except me seems to know of, but the Internet doesn’t tell me anything about?

Umm…AFAIK and IIRC, he didn’t spend 2 years in a tiger cage. It was only a few weeks, I think, before they broke out.

Umm…just repeating what was already said in the thread. Why pick on me?

I wish Matthew McConaughey would go away. His schtick is about as tired as Christian Slater’s.

Thomas, TC, and squadmates Nuzo and Cookie (who was replaced by Rick) spent a few weeks (not 2 years, I was exaggerating), as POWs in North Vietnam. They were held in bamboo cages, suspended from trees. The cages were too small to stand or sit in. Such cages are known as Tiger cages, for reasons I’m not aware of. All this was in the 2 parter “Did you See the Sun Rise?” in season 3, and possibly in other episodes.
