Mail Question... Post office, not E-mail. Tell me everything!!!

Ok, I know that mail does not get picked up or delivered on Sundays or holidays. But does the entire post office shut down on these days? Or do they just not deliver and pick up. I am wondering if they spend Sundays getting things together, shipping things across state and everything so that things are all ready for Monday. Or do they get everything ready for Monday on Saturday?
Do the truckers and planes still travel on Sundays, transporting the mail?
At what times do they stop on Saturday and start back on Monday? Are there any 24/7 post offices? There is a post office at the airport here. I can’t remember if it is 24/7 or if it closes at midnight. Hmmm…
Anyone know anything about the USPS? The last info about the return address and no stamp equals free postage was great!!

About five or ten years ago, I used to see USPS trucks on the highways on Saturdays and Sundays. I don’t travel as much as I used to, so I can’t say if they still do.

There ARE workers there at the PO saturday & sunday. How else do you think they are able to empty the mail bins when they get full?

Yes, the PO runs round the clock. Stuydad worked for the PO most of his life – not as a carrier, mind you. He worked at the main Brooklyn hub-type PO, not a little neighborhood branch, and yes he sometimes worked weekends. Window services were closed, but dad and his fellow clerks, sorters and other handlers were in there doing their thing 24/7.

Here in Manhattan there is the main branch PO near Penn Station that never, ever closes – full window service is available to customers around the clock. The local news crews always do a story from there around midnight of tax day to watch the madhouse (and it IS a madhouse) of last-minute tax return filers

I’m a rural mail carrier, so I can answer some of your questions.
Yes, the post office has people working 24/7. Think Express Mail if nothing else, that stuff gets delivered EVERY day, including Christmas. All kinds of shipping and sorting is going on, making Mondays a real pain for carriers. Basically 2 days worth of mail to sort and deliver instead of one. So quit complaining if your mail is delivered later than other week days! Most mail is shipped on commercial flights, if they stopped flying on weekends, we’d probably stop working on them.
Also, that “no stamp, return address” thing WILL work, but if you get caught, it’s mail fraud, a federal offense. Your carrier will remember if he/she sees too much stuff being returned to you, or whoever.

Bear, why not just call the PO and ask?

Call the PO and ask?

I didn’t know there was a general information hotline where questions like “do planes fly on sundays?” could be answered. I doubt the PO would pay someone just to satisfy people’s general inquiries about the inner workings of the USPS.

Hold on here, I think I’m missing something… Here we have a state police officer, who’s always reminding the rest of us to be good boys and girls so he or his comrades don’t have to have some unpleasent conversations with us, and he’s approving of a federal felony as good advice? Bear, is that really you?

The Post Office near where I work is open 24/7. It might be because it is the main branch for the entire city.

Also, the P.O. delivers Express Mail on Sundays definitely, and I think on holidays too.

i wanna say i heard on WMAQ a few years ago that in downtown chicago, they were experimenting with mail delivery on sunday, and not just express mail. i thought they were going to try this in large cities, but i could be wrong. was this an experiment, or do they not do this anymore?
