Strangely enough, not bad at all right now.
My mom’s a little nervous because they don’t have 14 days worth of nonperishable food. I think they’ll be fine, but it did make me pause when I heard all Zippy’s were closing and TheBus service was stopping.
I was there for 'Iniki and remember the dampness in the air. It seemed really quiet, too, not just a lack of people noise, but like everything had gone quiet except the wind and rain. Yet you knew something was happening. I remember putting masking tape on all the glass windows, which of course doesn’t do much, but it felt better to do something.
Be well, all. I hope the impact is minimal.
Winds have been very quiet in Pepeekeo. One gust at 15 miles an hour is the worst so far today, mostly the wind has been around 5 miles an hour and the atmospheric pressure is rising meaning the low pressure storm is moving away. BUT its really coming down!!! Almost 5.40 inches of rain so far today.
Alia Point is on the coast just south of Pepeekeo. It’s my go to site for local weather stats.
Newly planted Heliconias and the rest of the plants on the property are well watered and the catchment tank is overflowing. I can hear the nearby waterfall roaring. Can’t usually hear it inside the house.
Quiet here on Oahu at 1500 hst Thursday. Got a few things at Costco, gassed up the cars, got propane for the grill. Very quiet with all the schools out and govt./some businesses closed. Most of the panic buying was Monday/Tuesday. Today I pulled up to the Costo pumps, no line; that never happens.
Looks like winds will peak around 1400 Friday to midday Saturday. There goes golf for the weekend. Our electric grid will crash for a few/some days so it’s early to bed. Our town, Mililani, has all in-ground utilities but the island power plant grid connections are ancient/rudimentary. We have solar on the house but not the battery system (maybe next year). Will be grilling all the thawing freezer stuff then move on to munchies. I like Sam’s idea of mugging the local seniors (wait, I’m a local senior:confused:).
Actual plan is to spend the days at Costco - they have giant generators to keep the store going. My hope is that internet connections go down so they can’t process credit card transactions. That forces them to give out pizza and rotisserie chicken all day.
We were on the beach here in Waikiki a couple of hours ago this afternoon. Getting choppy but still not bad. Surfers continue surfing. Not supposed to hit us until tonight or tomorrow morning.
They let loose the hurricane warning sirens for three minutes a little while ago. I think they said on TV that was to remind people this may be their last chance to get to a shelter before the hurricane arrives, but that’s not really true.
Meanwhile, our neighbor’s little dog made the Weather Channel this morning. Her name is Bali, and she’s a beagle / Jack Russel terrier mix. We often dogsit her.
My son currently lives in Aiea (stationed at Pearl Harbor) - I’m really scared.
I wuldn’t worry too much about it. He’ll be fine.
Different geography, but I’ve been through a couple of hurricanes in Florida. The danger in Hawaii would be landslides, flash floods, and collapsing buildings. If he’s at Pearl Harbor, he’s pretty safe from all three, I’d guess.
Waikiki beaches are now officially closed.
Things change all the time, but I’m concerned for Oahu at the moment. We’re inconvenienced on the Big Island, and Hilo’s bayfront is under a lot of water, but as far as I know people are okay. Here’s hoping the other islands don’t experience anything worse!
Lane has been downgraded to a Category 3, so that’s good. We’re just hunkered down now, waiting. Still have electricity. Wind’s rising a little outside but not bad. We don’t think anything major will happen before midnight.
Sunny, mid-80’s, low humidity, & light winds for the next few days here. Just about perfect! ![]()
Be careful in all of the [del]ice & snow[/del] wind & rain.
Bali is a cutie.
He’ll be fine.
What branch is he serving with?
He’s Navy. 10 years now! Good God - his HS graduation seems like just yesterday! ![]()
I’ve been through this dance a few times over the past few years. Here’s the usual pattern.
I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary so far. It was bright and sunny yesterday with fluctuating winds, and fairly gusty today but with almost no rain. At first I thought we were supposed to get the worst of it Friday. Now I’m hearing that some of us were gearing up as early as Tuesday. Which I remember being cloudy and kinda windy.
Oahu hasn’t been hit by a hurricane that lived up to the billing in forever, and just hope something happens this time. Not on the scale of Iwa, of course, but at least some actual winds that don’t die after ten minutes and enough rain that it actually lowers the temperature a bit and replenishes our drinking water (we’ve had at least two really dry winters in a row). It’s getting wearisome listening to irritating squawking on the TV and reading alarmist newspaper articles just so I can sweat like a pig for three days again.
What the heck, I could use a long weekend. I don’t like driving or shopping that much to begin with, so no worries there.
One thing I don’t understand. There are warnings (near end) for south and west facing shores.
But Lane is rotating counterclockwise like a good N. Hemisphere hurricane should and is coming in from the SE and now S. Shouldn’t the warnings be for south and east facing beaches???
Storm is too far south.
A co-worker of mine went to New Orleans with his wife on vacation. Hurricane Katrina hit. They had to hitchhike out, caught a Greyhound bus in I think Shreveport and finally got to Dallas to fly home. He had to burn 7 extra days of vacation.
A co-worker of mine went to Houston with his family. While he was there Hurricane Harvey dropped in. He had to extend his vacation almost 2 weeks before he could get home.
Last Tuesday another co-worker went to Hawaii with his family. Yesterday in a text, he said the hotel they are staying in cleared out the upper floors and are having everyone stay in the bottom 2 floors. He is suppose to fly back to Seattle on Monday. We took bets on how late he will be returning to work.
I believe the Navy takes good care of its people in these situations. I know it’s hard not to worry. Have a virtual chocolate peanut butter cookie. passes one over
