Make the best mix CD

I love to burn CD’s. I love to throw some great songs into it and chill. BUT, as it turns out - IT’S CRAP!!! You cannot put Boomtown Rats right before Limp Bizkit! I don’t care if songs sound great on their own! I truly suck at this and I come here looking to y’all for some good mixes.

So, what would go onto a great mix CD? It could be themed (i.e. sex, sad, sappy-pappy-crap) or geared towards a genre (i.e. folk, punk, sappy-pappy-crap) or whatever (i.e. whatever, whatever, or sappy-pappy-crap).

Thanks
~t

OK, here’s my indie pop/wimp pop CD mix (and it flows pretty well):

Bob Mould, “See A Little Light”
Grant Hart, “Now That You Know Me”
The Posies, “Grant Hart”
The Shermans, “Rush Hour”
Sissy Bar, “Smiley (We Become)”
The Go-Betweens, “Right Here”
Grant McLennan, “Easy Come Easy Go”
Smudge, “Don’t Wanna Be Grant McLennan”
Go Sailor, “Fine Day For Sailing”

Stone Roses, “Elephant Stone”
Gunbunnies, “Stranded”
Velocity Girl, “Crazy Town”
The Divine Comedy, “Tonight We Fly”

Stir well and serve.

Thanks woodstockbirdybird, cool list. Did you see High Fidelity? Not only did it have a Belle & Sebastian song, but they also get mentioned. Pretty cool. Thanks again.

Man, I am the guy from “High Fidelity”. Except for the relationship problems.

And strategically mixed in amongst the songs were spoken intros taken from a Best of “Car Talk” CD.

Polish, I’ll answer your question. The Beautiful South is a British group started by Paul Heaton of the 80s pop band the Housemartins. It’s kinda subdued pop, with hints of music hall, and really acidic lyrics. Kind of like an English Ben Folds Five, with more songs about alcohol. I’d recommend them.

Thanks again woody ~ I will be giving The Beautiful South a listen this weekend.

Elfkin - I love jump, little children!!!
I saw them live twice in Athens, GA while I was at UGA

Woodstockbirdybird, PolishSausage, I like to describe The Beatiful South thusly. They tend to write two kinds of songs, heartfealt paeans to the glories of growing old and fat ('Til You Can’t Tuck it in, Perfect 10, When I’m 84), and songs about misery, betrayal, obsession and the darkness of the human soul (Don’t Marry Her, Mini-Correct, Woman in the Wall). But they always do it with catchy, bright, even cheeful, music that will leave you humming.

I have to agree with Woodstockbirdybird’s “acidic” comment, though I feel that’s not really . . . strong enough. Include “bitter” and “cynical” as well. Except for their songs about growing old and fat. Those are joyful and exhuberant. Though still sedate. On the whole, great stuff that I think about way too much now that I’m unemployed.

Which version of “Anyway,” male or female singing it? I have the version with the guy singing on one of my mix cds…

Please tell me you’re not from New England. I want to believe that there are non-New Englanders who know who Guster is(hence I nominated them in the “under-rated artist” threads). I’ve seen them twice, and plan to see them as many times more as I can.

Nope, not from New England.
I live, work and play  here in beautiful Atlanta, GA.
I saw Guster live once in Athens and Jump, Little Children twice. They are both amazing bands but seeing Guster live is just an amazing experience!

I’ve got the version of Anyway that features the entire band on the CD I made, but I have both on my computer. BTW, the girl that sings the other version is Emily Kate (and good lord can she sing or what?)
