I just made a new mixed tape last weekend for my daily commute and am pleasantly surprised at how well I like it. I’m a car-singer from way back but I really dislike the radio. So, I periodically make mixed tapes for the car (no CD player). Here is the line-up of my most recent.
Side 1: (Don’t go back to) Rockville by R.E.M. Somday some morning sometime by Billy Bragg and Wilco True faith by New Order I don’t want to grow up by Tom Waits Another drinkin’ song by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Baker street by Gerry Rafferty Friend of the Devil by the Grateful Dead Thank God, I’m a country boy by John Denver New York City by They Might Be Giants The ghost of Tom Joad by Bruce Springsteen Gloria by U2 Well, allright by Buddy Holly
Side 2: Guitar town by Steve Earle Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel Standing still by Jewel Shame on you by the Indigo Girls Solitary man by Neil Diamond Mrs. Potter’s lullaby by Counting Crows Windfall by Son Volt Redemption song by Ziggy Marley and the Chieftans John O’Reilly by Charlie Robison Sara smile by Hall and Oates Father and son by Cat Stevens
So my questions are, what is on your favorite mixed tape? Did you make it yourself? And if you did, do you have rules on what can go on it? For example, when I make a tape I only allow one song per artist and I’m pretty sure that I have included one They Might Be Giants song on every compilation I have ever made.
This is probably the best one i’ve made in the past 2 months:
**Covenant ** - Bullet
**Interpol **- Obstacle 1
**The Faint **- Call Call Morrissey - Everyday Is Like Sunday Cursive - A Red So Deep
**Sparta **- Cut Your Ribbon
**Specials **- Rat Race

My favorite was a tape I made while I was trying (unsuccessfully) to quit smoking. I took samples from the cheesy “Pathways to Change” promotional tape that came with the nicotine patch (it had Bob and Janet, two ex-smokers, helping each other resolve to stay smoke-free) and mixed them with songs that I’m always getting obsessively stuck in my head.
I can’t remember everything that was on it (so that part worked, at least), but the tracks I can remember:
Yaz- Situation
Indigo Girls- Secure Yourself
Deep Purple- Smoke on the Water
Tom Waits- Jockey Full of Bourbon
Suzanne Vega- Tom’s Diner
Aaron Copland/Leonard Bernstein- Rodeo: Hoedown (the Beef: It’s What’s For Dinner commercial music)
Tom Tom Club- Genius of Love
The Ohio Players- Love Rollercoaster
The Breeders- Cannonball
Palm Fabric Orchestra- Angelika Suspended
Hot Butter- Popcorn
Perrey & Kingsley- Baroque Hoedown (Disney’s Main St. Electrical Parade)
R.E.M.- Strange
Lawsuit- Anything
Naked Eyes- Always Something There to Remind Me
Note that if I tried the same thing today, it would definitely include “Where’s Your Head At?” by Basement Jaxx. Insidious.
Well, I don’t have rules, i just put the songs that i’m really into at the time, for example, this would be mine (if I follow the rules of a 1 hour tape, 30mins each side):
Side A: Pink Floyd - Dogs Dream Theater - Change Of Seasons
Side B: Queen - I Want To Break Free (Live Wimbledon '86) U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name (Live Rattle And Hum DVD) John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess - Furia Taurina Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Live Pulse CD1)
I usually have 1 side of studio album songs, and another side of live recordings
The effect should be start loud and grab the attention. Then bring it down to medium pace, before slowing it down, then gradually build it up to a climax at the end. - (Based loosly on High Fidelity)
Hey HalberMensch242, would you do me a big favor and email me? Mine’s listed in my profile… yours is not. Thanks in advance.
Re the OP. I rarely make mix tapes for myself (I almost always end up with the same songs), but here’s one I made for myself a few years back that I still like to hear sometimes. Don’t judge me too harshly, there’s one or two ‘guilty pleasure’ songs and at least one inside joke (with myself) song on it:
Side A:
Neil Young - The Loner
Radiohead - Anyone can play guitar
Counting Crows - I Wish I Was a Girl
Cake - Guitar
Alkaline Trio - Cringe
eels - Hospital Food
Soul Coughing - So Far I Have Not Found the Science
The Pixies - Where Is My Mind?
Weezer - The World Has Turned And Left Me Here
Korea Girl - B-Side
Pavement - Zurich Is Stained
Bradley Nowell - Eye of Fatima
The Chinkees - Big World
Side B
Radiohead - Exit Music (for a film)
Pavement - Stop Breathing
Piebald - Small Town Outside of Boston
Gomez - Rosalita
Neil Young - Don’t Cry
Ben Harper - Ashes
Neil Young - Old Man
Guster - Demons
Bradley Nowell - Saw Red
Cake - Sheep Go To Heaven
Semisonic - This Will Be My Year
Neil Young and Pearl Jam - What Happened Yesterday
The last mix CD I made was also one of my best. But it wasn’t for me. Here it is though.
1 Archers of Loaf - You and Me
2 The Dismemberment Plan - The Face of the Earth
3 Braid - Please Drive Faster
4 Modest Mouse - Custom Concern
5 Dealership - My Box
6 Bright Eyes - A Perfect Sonnet
7 Cursive - Mothership Mothership Do You Read Me
8 Desaparecidos - What’s New For Fall
9 Alkaline Trio - Cringe
10 This Busy Monster - What She Said
11 The Impossibles - Invisible
12 Recover - Match Like Memory
13 Thursday - This Side of Brightness
14 Piebald - Small Town Outside of Boston
15 The Dismemberment Plan - Following Through
16 Mates of State - A Duel Will Settle This
17 The Impossibles - Connecticut
18 Ozma - Los Angeles
19 Pinback - Rousseau
20 Azure Ray - Sleep
For a complete music geek like myself, this is an amazingly cool question. I made this one about two years ago, give or take, and it’s still the best. Side A
Nothing, actually. The MP3 didn’t record for some reason.
“Crazy” - Afghan Whigs
“Don’t Need a Reason” - Beth Orton
“Wonderful Love” - Creeper Lagoon
“66” - Afghan Whigs
“Easy Tonight” - Five For Fighting
“Last Stop: This Town” - eels
“Thunderstorm” - Matthew Sweet
Side B
“Don’t Panic” - Coldplay
“Bohemian Like You” - Dandy Warhols
“Wish” - Wild Strawberries
“You’d Better Get Yourself Together, Baby” - The Gigolo Aunts
“Prophecy” - Remy Zero
“Elevation” - U2
“Flower” - eels
“Champagne High” - Sister Hazel
“I’ll Be Back” - Agents of Good Roots
Even though it’s a burned CD, I still get all nostalgic and weepy over mix tapes so I tend to divide them into two sides. Two of my favorite songs are on here - the Afghan Whigs’ “Crazy” and Agents of Good Roots’ “I’ll Be Back” - so I still love it despite some of the more recognizable and (now) overplayed tracks.
