Make-up artists - how did you get your job?

I’m going to try to make this as concise as possible, which is remarkably hard for me as I have a tendency to ramble and overshare, so bear with me!

I’m studying make-up art at a school which is apparently highly renowned. I haven’t graduated yet, but I’m looking for work anyway. I’m qualified to be a make-up artist and it’s what I want to do.

Anyway, my idea was to start as a make-up artist at a cosmetics counter, and as I get to know more people in the industry, I can see where it takes me from there and get into working on movies and TV. By the time my course ends (April 1), I will be qualified to do special effects makeup, but even now, I’m already qualified for counter work, TV, film, and theatre. It’s just hard to actually get hired! Everyone says they are not hiring, and people have conflicting information even within the same store, and it’s just really so confusing. As it is, I have the ability, the know-how, the skill - but I just have no idea how to get an actual job!

A lot of people have another job, unrelated to make-up, and get their connections by volunteering. Some just get a job right away.

I’m just looking for your experiences. If you’re a successful make-up artist, how did you get your foot in the door? If you’re an unsuccessful make-up artist, where are you stuck? If you have any friends who are make-up artists, how did they get into the industry?

Any help is appreciated!
