With 332 of 1781 precincts reporting, we have:

Close. Very close.

Doesn’t really settle the numbers game in this thread, but CNN just called Iowa for Huckabee. The big three Democrats look to be almost literally tied.

And for those wanting the other half

With 15% reporting Huckabee in a walk

Huckabee 36%
Romney 23%
Thompson 15%
McCain 12%
Paul 11%
Guiliani 3%
Hunter 0%

Thompson and Paul are surprising if those hold up. And if Paul can climb into third that would be astonishingly funny.

And the democratic race is just too close to call.

My man won! Go Huckabee!

As of now…

889 Precincts reporting (of 1781)

Senator Barack Obama : 33.88%
Senator John Edwards : 31.84%
Senator Hillary Clinton : 31.60%

Wow, 3% for Gulliani. I realize he wasn’t contesting Iowa, but still, has anyone ever gotten that lowa in an early primary and still gone on to win the nomination?

Moot question, I’m afraid. Rudy is up to 11% with the latest update.

Obama is extending his lead to about 4% over Edwards and then Hillary.

I will be shocked and excited if Obama pulls this off.

Daniel

Man, Hillary is getting smacked around. My boy Obama is taking her behind the woodshed.

Good. I’ll vote for Obama without even thinking about it. I wouldn’t vote for Hillary on a bet.

Could it be? Could it be?

Senator Hillary Clinton : 31.03%

That’s actually an interesting dynamic, AD. Obama seems significant more left than Hillary but can he move more moderate/right voters because of his lack of Hillary-baggage?

MSNBC just called it for Obama. It’s very tight, but obviously this would be huge for him and maybe even bigger for Edwards, who is slightly ahead (practical tie) with Clinton.

w00t! Obama has a commanding lead!

If Barack wins and Hillary has her ass handed to her (which means anything except first place - no matter how they spin it) I will do the happy dance!

So what do you think of Obama/Edwards '08?

Wasn’t Hillary’s campaign saying that if she came in third, it was fine, that she’d done what she wanted to do in Iowa and was looking forward to New Hampshire?

Do you think they had a good idea she wasn’t going to win, or do you think they were trying to energize her base to go out and caucus for her?

I think they knew it was going to be too damn close to make a firm prediction. Of course, she’ll stay in and fight for New Hampshire and those downstream. She’ll stay in through February 5th even if she doesn’t win any state. She’s got the name recognition and the money to do it.

NPR just called it for Obama.

CNN’s current breakdown:

With 72% of precincts reporting:

Obama 35%
Edwards 31% 0
Clinton 31% 0
Richardson 2% 0
Biden 1%

OK Hillary should realize now that she is not a uniting figure. With the best of efforts she cannot convince a plurality of DEMOCRATS to support her.

It is time for new blood and new ideas. She has become the old democrat. It seems that the Iraq War was a bigger issue for the Dems than was thought, and her cynical criticism of the war while voting for it and every war funding bill to come along rang hollow…

…sorry, I got carried away.

I think they had a good idea she was going to have problems. I also think they were desperately trying to pad the landing area with lowered expectations. It’s a LOOOONG fall from “inevitability” to “3rd Place”.

I don’t think he has to. The Republicans don’t have it this year. None of the candidates are very attractive. If Obama manages to get the nomination he can simply continue to be what he is and he’ll win.

The bottom line is that the country (in my estimation) is fatigued of the Republicans and are going to give whatever Democratic candidate is presented to them a shot. For my part, I don’t agree with everything that Obama stands for, hell, I don’t really agree with much of anything he says, but I am anxious to give him an opportunity. I wonder if it’s too late to register Democrat?

“1%! 1% would be a MONUMENTAL victory!”
