Does anyone out there make collectable Bears? I have just become fascinated by collecting Bears, especiially miniatures, and the way I can tie them in to my writing and photography interests. Now I’m becoming more and more interested in making my own Bears, but I don’t know where to start.
Any advice? Recommendations? Tutorials? Books? I’m in Victoria, Australia if you have any workshop recommendations.
Also, what Bear Artists are amongst your favourites?
Just wondering if this is serious. Most people on this board are too cool to overdose on cuteness (assuming you mean cuddly bears, not enraged grizzlies).
If you are serious, I can only tell you what I would do. It would involve not making bears.
If it were me, I’d take a look at how much time would be taken up in researching bears, buying fabric for bears, making bears (esp. whan you can buy hundr…thousands of bears already-made). You even mention finding tutorials for bears, and tracking down bear artists. And presumably watching bear artists, reading bear artists’ web sites, going to see bear artists at bear conventions, etc…
I would hope a friend would say the same thing to me if I announced I were going to start hand-carving a complex HO-Scale city, with hundreds of people and dogs.
I would try to find a hobby that took less time away from more important things, and either improved my mind, or (bonus!) the world.
I’d suggest posting your question to a crafting board. Craftster.org has a toys and dolls section. It’s U.S. based but hopefully people there will point you in the right direction.
If you google “bear making supplies australia” (without the quotes) there are quite a few sites that come up. That should give you some ideas on what you would need to get started.
I apologize. I didn’t mean to do that-- I think I was externalizing all the time I’ve spent in the past getting excited about a new pastime… only to have it suck all my free time into a black hole. Thought my kids would love the model RR (with the HO-scale city), but no one cared. And when I cooled on it, I was left with an 8x16’ white elephant. So I’m seriously suggesting choosing hobbies carefully. At least my wood-working phase resulted in some cool shelves.
