Making phonetic symbols on the computer

I want to type a document that includes phonetic symbols for pronunciation guides. My audience is not familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet, so I have been asked to use phonetic symbols traditionally used in American dictionaries.

In this system, there are no special characters available. You have only the standard character set of the English alphabet plus three diacritics – the macron (a short, straight line above the “long” vowel), the breve (a small U-shaped curve above the “short” vowel), and the diaeresis (two small dots over the vowel, like an umlaut).

I see that in Microsoft word, I can use the “insert symbol” menu to access vowels with breves and diaereses, but none for the macron. Does anyone know how I can make a character that looks like a vowel with a macron in Word?

Thanks.

These were made in M$ Word using “Insert Symbol”.

Got it! It just took me a while to find them in that gigantic menu.
