It seems that the majority of the so called fine-dining restaurants throughout the world employ male servers or waiters. I feel that in general, men are better servers than women…more personable…more efficient. I know this sounds like a male chauvinist pig talking. Do you users feel they are equally good or one group better than the other? And if so, why?
I would much rather be served by a female.
They are more personable, cheerful, and much less arrogant.
I’ve never heard a woman server say," Hi, I’m Peggy, and I’'ll be your waitress tonight."
But boy, I’ve heard, Hi, I’m Randy, yada,yada.
Big deal! What, I don’t have any friends of my own? Just bring the food, moron.

I agree with Wally. Guys seem to be less flexible, serious tipmongers and downright annoying (for the most part.) Of course I’ve had good and bad of both sexes. I also think it depends a lot of what sort of establishment you’re in. We treat ourselves to an outrageously extravagent dinner once a year or so at the Four Seasons and the waitstaff there have always been men for some reason. The service is, of course, outstanding; but I suspect they are subjected to more training and stricter guidelines than someone working at Olive Garden or what have you.

I remember one time when I was still dating my wife, we went out to lunch with a couple friends of hers and had terrible service. I hesitate to even use the word “service.” As we were finishing up, another couple came in and was seated near us. Hermaphrodites are the best servers - you just think they are men or women, they just don’t spell it out.
Maybe finer restaurants employ male servers because the food, plates, utensils, are heavier than at Olive Garden? Plus male uniforms are easier to fit. We had to wear mens’ pants in chef school, and they do not fit a woman’s curves.
As a female, I prefer female servers. I don’t mind them flirting with my boyfriend, but I hate when a waiter flirts with me.

Well, I’ve had good service on both sides, but bad service almost exclusively by females. I have no doubt that this is because the Denny’s of the world are virtually 100% female, while all the 4 star restaruants have a slight majority of male servers, I’d guess maybe 65%. I’ll do this one better, the bad service is mostly middle aged women 30-50 yo. I assume that their can’t move as quickly as a younger person, and may not be able to remember and focus as they once could. Not to say that i haven’t had a few total airhead teenagers as well, but their really cute so I let it slide :).
I don’t think the bears out any gender issues, just illustrates the circumstances that many men and women get the jobs waiting tables.
