I’m interested in getting a hold of a replica Maltese falcon statue for a friend who loves the movie. I’ve seen various sources for them, all claiming theirs is the best, and others are crap. Anyone have any experience with the little black bird and their quality?
Pssst - if you find one that has gold underneath when you scratch the black, let us know.
Didn’t we do a thread on this about 7 or 8 years ago?
Anywhoo, here is one that seems to be a pretty spot on replica of the 1941 movie prop. All the usual waivers apply, I found it by googling.
Bumped.
Not a statue, but a necktie (regular or bow tie):

If I was looking for these I would want the tie to be a lighter color with black falcons on it. Also, since the statue in the movie was a fake, the tie should certainly not cost $75.00
Best place for this kind of question nowadays is probably the Replica Prop Forum(as featured on Adam Savage’s Tested stuff).
They did not have a high opinion of the Haunted Studios replica.
Here’s a thread I started back in 2005 about making one’s own falcon. Sometime after I started it, I found and bought a cheap and not very accurate replica that I was never very happy with. Then in 2009 I updated the thread (post #28) with a link to a video by Adam Savage about how he made his own dingus, and with news of a new replica that was a lot more faithful to the 1941 prop.
I bought the Haunted Studios 1941 falcon replica back in 2009, and I’m very happy with it. IMHO, it’s very accurate to the original, and I have enjoyed keeping it on my mantel.
As for the people on the replica prop forum not liking it, 1) some of them are referring to the less accurate versions like my first one, and B) they are hardcore movie prop purists who have extremely high standards for authenticity, a strong preference for handmade pieces, and enormous disdain for mass-produced, commercially available products like the Haunted Studios bird. If you’re not quite as fanatical as they are, you’ll probably find the 1941 HS falcon to be perfectly suitable for your purposes, and it won’t cost you thousands of dollars.
One of the purists’ objections has alway been the weight: in the story, the falcon is supposed to be solid gold, and so one of the original props for the 1941 Huston film was cast in solid lead, and weighed close to 40 pounds. However, it was too heavy for use on set, so a plaster cast is what we actually see in the film. But prop purists complained that most replicas (in plaster or resin) were not heavy enough, and made theirs much heavier.
In response, Haunted Studios has now done the same, and you can get their version in various weights, from 10 pounds up to 30, for prices up to $450.
The one I bought is unweighted, about 5 pounds, which is perfectly fine for me. But if you want little more heft, feel free. I don’t think you’ll fool anyone into thinking your dingus is solid gold under the lacquer.
A lot of them were complaining that Haunted Studios sent them broken/damaged goods, as well.
That looks great! And I have plenty of time to drop Christmas, or even sooner, birthday hints.
