I asked a Chinese colleague about it and he basically said it doesn’t have religious connotation, it’s just a nice happy family tradition they thought was cool and wanted to get in on. I mean come on - Santa, lights, presents, family, spoiling your kids, eating and drinking till you drop; who wouldn’t want in on that?!
I don’t know about China, but Japan has some great Christmas traditions. What’s synonymous with Christmas? Kentucky Fried Chicken! KFC family dinners are so popular for Christmas in Japan that in order to get one you basically have to order them well in advance. Advertising is great.
I get the feeling that might be regional. I know it’s real big in cities but my wife from Akita never heard of it.
I know it’s big in the Tokyo area at least, and I’ve heard tell of it from people from the Kansai region, so you may be right.

I lived there a couple years and yeah, this is pretty much it.
I had a guy try to convince me that is isn’t celebrated, but I pointed out all the stores are playing Xmas music and are decorated and he had to acknowledge it is big.
He did the right thing. What is it with women and shoes, anyway?
