Man fined for punching a punch bag.

I think it’s a testament to the world as it currently is when no matter how many times I find myself saying or thinking “Now I have seen it all” I am still able to find things that compel me to exclaim “What the Fuck?”

This is the latest. Someone gets fined for damaging something designed to be punished as hard as humanly possible. I say kudos to whoever is able to actually damage a thing which is designed to be hit as hard as possible by statistically strong, daring people.

Ok, how does a punching bag “swing back and hit him in the jaw”? They show a pic of one of those body bags, so if the whole thing swung he might have been hit somewhere on the torso, but the jaw? Maybe in reality it one one of those little speed balls?

Do you suppose it might have only been for kids? I wonder because it was in an arcade.

I got in trouble for something similar once. Turns out there’s whacking a mole, and whacking a mole.

No. Whenever I’ve seen them (often) there’s an adult who looks like a boxer using it.

Glad to see you still feel comfortable using the Pit as your personal blog after all these years, Lobsang. Your Pit threads are like eating breakfast with one’s mom while she reads crazy headlines from the paper out loud. “It says here a man bit a dog! Why, I never!”

Tasty! Truly, this is a work of art; there isn’t even any obscenity. I like it!

It was at an amusement arcade. I’m guessing it’s a machine like this one. And i’d imagine that you might damage the machine through improper behaviour.

I’m guessing it’s one where the punch bag flips up from a base, rather than down. If he was leaning over it, it would probably have hit him in the jaw. If the mechanism is not ready to have something hit it, it might jam for example, which would damage the machine.

I’m only doing what is validated by the fact that other dopers do it.

If it were my personal blog it’d be about me. It isn’t about me. What have I done to you that would cause you to want to try to hurt my feelings?

The article is useless for explaining the details enough to understand the situation.

If the device has a mechanism such that it is “on” and ready for punches for a certain time limit, then “off” and rigid, then yes, someone can damage the mechanism even though it is designed to be punched hard.

Similarly, did he hit the punching bag itself, or the machine that holds it? What did he break?

He broke a piece of equipment for hitting it in a manner different than it was designed to be hit. Doesn’t matter that there is a way it is supposed to be hit, he didn’t hit it that way. Ergo, he got fined.
