I love newbies. So what shall it be? A warm welcome to the board or the sarcastic overcast of what makes you think you are worthy to be on this board just cause you found the site and can type? The one-hundred million times question of ‘how do you know when you are not a newbie any more?’
Well I’ve had my coffee fix for the day and am in a rather pleasant mood (don’t get used to it) so I shall say welcome to the boards, step right in, make that initial fool of yourself as we all did to begin with, and make yourself at home.

Darn it, now I’m really getting tempted to head over to Great Debates and plunge in. If there’s all these warnings, it’s either got to be a lot of fun or really dangerous. (Probably the latter, for me.) Guess it’ll have to wait until I’m on vacation next week, though.
Well, they can be fun to read (until they degenerate into the inevitable “I’m right, and you’re a freaking idiot” tirades), but man, if you say anything, you better be able to back it up with a ream o’ cites.

Actually, you’re not a Doper until you go to a Dopefest. It’s the law.
Hmm…that could be problematic. I may have to slink off into oblivion, muttering imprecations about our urge to move into the back of beyond, far away from all major Dopefests. I wouldn’t recommend having one up here - shortage of cool hangouts and frequent snow being a definite consideration.
Well, don’t slink off just yet. A lot of us ain’t never been to one.
Offer to host one! Man they come crawling out of the woodwork and you’ll find yourself surrounded by dopers in no time. Just post a thread called “[geographic area] Dopefest?” and see the sparks fly!

I’m another one who hasn’t made a Dopefest yet! I think our Maryland/Virginia Dopers get spoiled. Typo, Monstre, welcome to the Boards. I’m looking forward to getting to know you. Monstre, if you can cook up a parody that gets little inhibited me singing it in my living room and are interested in women, well, let’s just say, “How you doin?” I think you might be able to give Fenris a run for his money!
As for Great Debates, it’s a tough crowd, but one of the best places to get rid of some of your own ignorance. I’ve learned more from that forum than I have anywhere else around here. On the other hand, sometimes that place scares me!

Hey, if you can’t bring a Dopefest to you, bring yourself to a Dopefest. Of all the 'fests I’ve been to (ummm… Denver, Chicago, LA, SF… ) only one has been in my home state, which is Minnesota, in case you’re curious. (Sorry chique!

Minnesota, eh? That might be possible, but until then I’ll just enjoy the virtual fests on the board. Besides, I don’t want to show up and have everybody going “Typo WHO?” I figure I gotta have at least a few hundred under my belt first…

Don’t worry about that. I guarantee you that even if some people who have largeish counts were to go to a Fest, people might wonder who they were. No one reads every post everyone else makes, anyway. And besides, who gives a frig, anyway? All you gotta say is that you’re from the Dope.
