Mandalay Bay (Las Vegas) shooting

The only time I’ve ever seen anything like that is during the Shot Show.

They have other gun shows there fairly regularly. Looks like there is one scheduled for a few weeks from now in Las Vegas. I’m sure some small-time dealers and people disposing of their private collections haul them to and from their hotel rooms to not leave them exposed in vehicles overnight.

Last night, while the police activity was ongoing, Wayne Allyn Root, whose Twitter page calls him a “conservative WARrior”, and who’s a columnist for the Sheldon Adelson-owned local Las Vegas paper, was tweeting about “multiple Muslim shooters” at various hotels and casinos on the Strip. I was listening to the LVPD live dispatch feed, and I replied to him that his claims (which he said were supported by reliable sources and by police sources and liberals were lying) were not backed by what the police were saying. So instead of opening dialogue, he just blocked me.

I was not argumentative, nor confrontational, I just said that the police feed didn’t support his claims.

Police said he had nineteen weapons in his room.

It’s not uncommon at all for SWAT to be prestaged at large events like this one. I’m betting they were already there, very close and ready to respond. Not due to having early warning, but simply out of precaution and standard procedure.

That’s my point: it happens because of a gun show. It’s not that Las Vegas is a lawless wasteland where lowlifes sell guns & ammo right in casinos to whoever has the money 24/7/365; they’re legitimate dealers in town for a gun show.

Besides, Nevada is an open carry state. It’s legal to carry a gun into a casino or a bar, as long as the owners haven’t said you cannot. And even then, all they can do is bar you for trespassing.

A review of the timeline on the news puts the shooting spree at about an hour in length.

He was a regular gambler who apparently owned millions of dollars of property. I wonder if he lost it all.

He’s not wrong.

They are already outside his Reno house, as well. Not sure why that would be news-worthy.

Gee, whiz, why make any conjectures? It’s already official!
Except that he’s not a “nut job”—he’s a “Maniac.”,
The headline on Foxnews.com right now says “Police seek maniac gunman’s motive”

(the quoted headline is on display currently, at 6:16 pm. )

Every media outlet has been reporting nonstop that Paddock is dead, apparently by suicide when the SWAT entered his room. There may be some doubt remaining whether they shot first, but he is unquestionably dead, and that seems to have been reported right away.

So what does Twitter do?

That page also lists a number of other rumors being repeated as fact on social media. They’re bad but issuing death threats against a man already known publicly to be dead needs to top some list.

His girlfriend had a Mandalay Bay platinum members’ card. They probably got discounts and priority.

Hope you recover soon.

The city proper of Las Vegas is a section of the overall urban/suburban mass which in turn is smaller than the overall footprint of Clark County. But the city proper is where almost all the tourist and casino stuff is./QUOTE]

The Strip and the airport are located in the unincorporated town of Paradise, Nevada.

The news I read this morning said 58 dead, 515 injured.

I wonder how this will effect future large concerts?

How many people were at the concert? 515 injured seems like a lot for an outdoor concert, especially since it was in an open field not an ampitheater. What’s the scoop?

Possibly just that much panic from shooting going right into the crowd, leading to stampeding?

What a fucking thing. Dang.

Injured could mean almost anything, from shot-through-the-lung-and-on-life-support, to fell-and-skinned-your-knee-while-running-away, and anything in between.

ETA: I really doubt he actually hit 515 individuals with gunfire.

BBC reckons 22,000 at the gig. The fucker had a big target to aim at.
