"Mandingo" and modern societal connotation

I’ve looked around, but can’t find Mandingo in any context other than an African language and a word coupled with “hot interracial action” on porn sites.

I’ve gathered that the word implies a white woman’s desire to have sex with black men. Is this right? How did this come about? Can anyone elaborate on the phrase’s meaning and significance?

Thanks.

The novel (and later movie) by Kyle Onstott.

Can I gather that Mandingo (the movie) is bad-enough-to-be-cult, and so it’s become a cliche for more or less ironic reasons? My review searches indicate that it’s pretty terrible.
