Manhattan Prosecutors file criminal charges for Trump re Stormy Daniels case - ongoing discussion here (Guilty on all 34 counts, May 30, 2024)

Not a preference, but it often happens that some horse or horses in the bloodline is referred to. The filly Dance Smartly won the Queen’s Plate in 1991; her dam (mother) was Classy 'n Smart and her grandsire (grandfather) was Northern Dancer. So, “Dance Smartly” pays tribute to horses in her bloodline.

(I’ll shut up about racing now. I could go on forever, but there are better forums and threads for it.)

I think they don’t have any kind of defense. “Cohen is a piece of crap” is all they have, so that’s what they’re going to bang on about.

They way I see it, if they had something credible to destroy Cohen’s testimony, why haven’t we heard it yet? If they show the smoking gun tomorrow, won’t they jury be thinking, “If you had this all along, why did you waste a whole day of our time calling each other names?!?”

Bluster is all they have, so bluster is what they’ll use.

Yes, if they had something strong, I’d expect to see it early in a relatively short cross. However, if they have something that appears strong but it’s really deceptive, they might want to wait until Thursday so the State doesn’t have today to figure out how to react.

If we get a guilty verdict, will Trump go to jail pending sentence? Or will he be able to walk around and spew shit as usual? How long do you think Merchan will take to sentence him?

What about this pending debate with Biden on June 17th?

Maybe he could call in to the debate from a payphone?

(Just to be clear, that is facetious, there’s no way he’s going to jail on these charges, even if convicted).

He might not be sentenced to jail in the first place. It’s not a violent crime and he would be his first conviction. He would be free pending sentencing. There would be a sentencing hearing where both sides present their case and then the judge would take time to decide. The prosecution and defence will each recommend a certain sentence. If he is sentenced to jail time (or much more likely house arrest) he will almost certainly be free until the appeal is complete.

He won’t go to jail pending sentence, so he will be able to walk around and spew shit as usual.

He will have been convicted of a white-collar crime, so he doesn’t present a physical danger to the community. (His supporters, however …) He’s a bit of a flight risk, but it’s understandable: he lives outside of New York state, and he needs to campaign in New Hampshire, Georgia, Wisconsin, and all the other places he names during his Daily Post-Court Rant. At any rate, he likely won’t be leaving the United States.

Such a release can, however, carry conditions. I’d imagine that the gag order about the witnesses, the jury, and so on would continue, at the very least.

No idea about when sentencing would occur, if he’s convicted.

I think “almost certainly” is too strong. There is definitely that possibility. But a lot of factors will come into play (including the likelihood of the appeal being successful)

He will be given a date to report to jail. His lawyers will have to appeal (which they definitely will do) and get a ruling that suspends the prison sentence during the appeal, before that date. It can happen but it’s not a forgone conclusion.

This is a good point. Follow these rules while the appeal is going on or there will be consequences.

This is definitely not true. He’s not looking at decades in prison but it would be really shocking (and very uncharacteristic of Judge Mercan) for him to get a non custodial sentence if he’s convicted of all charges. There is nothing to suggest that is a strong likelihood

My guess is if he’s found guilty on all charges he will get a months long sentence possibly over a year.

One major reason this is not the case is the “double jeopardy” clause in the Fifth Amendment. If you are acquitted, the question is settled and you can never be called to answer for it again. If the jury cannot unanimously decide that you are innocent, the question has not been settled (doubt remains) and you may still have to answer for it.

cnn debate on the 27th of june. no audience.

from msn:

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump agreed Wednesday to participate in general election debates on June 27 and Sept. 10, ending speculation about whether 2024 general election debates would happen at all.

CNN will host the first debate in late June at 9 p.m. at its studios in Atlanta, according to a press release from the news organization. ABC News said it will host the September debate.

How delightfully optimistic of them. Trump has over a month to find some reason to cancel. We should start a betting pool.

If they announce today that Trump won’t testify, there are a few days for Trump to read all the news about him being a coward and decide that he will. Much better to continue to dangle the possibility until the last possible minute.

“Wahhh! I have to be in Atlanta for the far leftist CNN’s debate on June 27! I’ll be unable to campaign in Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Arizona! Election interference! Wahhh!”

Seriously, is there any news as to whether the moderator will have a “mute” button on Trump’s microphone? Will there be a studio audience?

ETA: Heard just now on CNN: There will be no live audience.

CNN’s legal correspondent suggested the defense’s purpose in the non-sequential questions and leading off with a question about Blanche was to circumvent the rehearsals and prep work Cohen had been put through by the prosecutors. It’s an attempt to get him off script and see what comes out.

It’s a low-probability approach, but so was any option.

So it will be a standard Trump rally.

Count on a Trump lawyer to bring sand to the beach. Cohen knows all the shitbag tricks because he invented them. He has 200% immunity to this kind of thing.

I think Trump’s lawyers are hoping for a reaction like when Fani Willis was put on the stand and she breathed fire all over the courtroom. They (and their client especially) must be furious that they can’t get under Cohen’s skin like this.

yes, cnn mentioned there will be a “microphone off” button.

Good to know, thanks. I remember one of 2020’s debates, where Trump just would not shut up. I think it may have been the one where Biden ended up saying, “Come on, man.” Trump constantly interrupted, talking over Biden, and there was some talk about a mute button then. Glad to hear that there will be one now.
