Manhattan Prosecutors file criminal charges for Trump re Stormy Daniels case - ongoing discussion here (Guilty on all 34 counts, May 30, 2024)

I don’t think he has. I think the judge wants to avoid a total revolt which might actually increase his popularity.

I’m thinking most non-violent first time offenders plead out and show a little remorse for their crimes. Trump spent the entirety of the trial attacking all aspects of the justice system and he showed no remorse for his actions. For Trump to be sentenced to jail time for this would be fair.

This is the same line of thinking as to why Trump shouldn’t have been charged in the first place. Republicans were bragging that indictments were just going to make Trump more popular. I didn’t buy it then, I don’t buy it now, and even if it were true I wouldn’t expect it Merchan to weigh it in his decision.

First time offender, non-violent crime.

Yep.

Wont happen.

This. All of this.

Which part? The judge avoiding a revolt, or the increase in his popularity? The popularity increase has increased with every legal action so far, at least as far as MAGA and GOP support go.

The best punishment for Trump is for everyone to just completely ignore him. Kind of like what’s happening compared with Harris.

He already has MAGA and GOP support. But…

Politico: New Polling Shows the Real Fallout From the Trump Conviction

Among the most notable findings in our poll: 21 percent of independents said the conviction made them less likely to support Trump and that it would be an important factor in their vote. In a close election, small shifts among independent and swing voters could determine the outcome.

These are the people Trump needs to convince if he wants to win. If he is sentenced to serious time, those undecided voters may decide they don’t want a jailbird for president.

That poll was a while back, but it shows that the idea that legal action only helps his political aspirations is just not true. The idea that Trump only gets stronger when he faces legal consequences not only flies in the face of common sense, it isn’t supported by data.

Revolt. Fat, lazy cowards wont revolt. And not really any increase, just not the expected decrease, but indys started to say no.

it’s one of those things the members of his cult like to say over and over, as though that makes it true

Hope so. Doing so would put the SS agents in all kind of jeopardy I would think. From Venezuela and the USA.

And what about the pilots of the the plane? I think there is a fair chance that none of these folks would see their familys again.

Except that Trump has the right to decline SS protection. I doubt he would ever do that, but ex-presidents can accept or decline SS protection at will.

That sounds to me like a really great reason for a presidential candidate to not commit felonies.

The other choice is Putin II. A stupid Putin II. A Putin II under control of Putin I

Having Trump get proper justice, may make other politicians take notice.

Not just members of his cult. Trump managed to get elected in 2016 despite saying things that would have ended any other candidate’s chances of being elected. He was a terrible president who did enormous damage to his own party and still managed a pretty solid run for the presidency in 2020. Even after attempting to stay in power using violence, Trump not only continues to have the support of the party but consolidated his power and took over the RNC.

I think some people fall into despair when it comes to Trump. Trump Despairment Syndrom? Some form of depression where you can’t help but think Trump will come out ahead no matter what.

I think some are so embarrassed to have ever supported that dumb shit, that the only way out is for him to win. But it that happens, we will all be really and truly screwed. Including Trump supporters.

Oh, a few will come out on top. Depends on just how much ass kissing you are willing to do.

There is a solution for this. Be an upstanding person, admit your mistake don’t vote for him, and move on. Trumps a con man, that’s his entire business model, you got conned.

Evidence seems to indicate that Putin the Vlad is not as smart as he thinks he is.

Or at least not as smart as he used to be. Everybody loses a step or two as they age. Especially when they haven’t been challenged in a while. And he’s already left 70 years old in the rearview.

I predict that Judge Merchan will delay sentencing until after the election, with the hope that Trump loses so the sentence loses its political implications.

Kicking the can down the road is a time honored tradition in the law, and this would be a good time to do it.

I also expect that he won’t use the election as the reason; the lawyers will help by asserting the need to address some thing or another. And he will allow them more time to do whatever lawyers do.

But it will be to avoid the election, and I’m certain that he’s hoping that Trump loses, so he doesn’t have to sentence a president-elect. If Trump loses, sentencing is easy; he’s just a mook who committed dozens of felonies, just like all the others.

‘Course, if he’s president-elect, you might consider just staying all proceedings pending appeal to the United States Supreme Court. What’s that…Trump hasn’t filed an appeal? Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll get to it when he’s ready. Now keep your head down while you inquire about trips to Costa Rica.

I think the same. Judge Merchan is too smart to be the 2024 Comey.

And given the total lack of contrition, one suspects it will involve at least some jail time. Though probably nowhere near the maximum

And sometimes judges have an end date in mind, but get there by granting multiple continuances instead of just one long extended one. In this case, it enables plausible deniability against charges of being “political”.
