How Impeaching a Supreme Court Justice Works
Only one Supreme Court Justice has ever been impeached. Here’s how the process works and what happened the only time it succeeded.
And if he did, how would they be enforced?
I made a mistake - it was an appellate Justice Ellen Gesmer who turned down Trump’s emergency stay today.

I love this:
Blanche said sentencing is an “extraordinary” imposition on Trump, adding a criminal sentencing is “a big deal” in someone’s life even if it’s only going to take an hour. The judge cut him off and noted Merchan would have been happy to sentence Trump in July.
“Blanche” is
Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche – the president-elect’s pick to be deputy attorney general in his new administration {…}
Fines, liens, threat of arrest, regular public haranguing that reminds the public that the President is a convicted felon and one who spends most of his time playing golf instead of doing the job.
Catching – literally – nobody off guard, Trump’s team has asked the US Supreme Court to intervene on his behalf regarding Friday’s sentencing:
Trump’s going with “For God’s sake! Think of the children!!” on this one:
The sentencing should be delayed as he appeals the conviction to “prevent grave injustice and harm to the institution of the Presidency and the operations of the federal government,” they argued.
Nice.
Well, this will be a useful test of how obsequious the SC is going to be to Trump. If they roll over on this, he’s golden, and everyone else is screwed.
This may very well be the reason they’re doing it. Trump needs to know the answer to this question too.
Yeah, right. That has always worked before.
You don’t always do things because they will work.
If you thought I was saying the following shouldn’t be done because trump will never comply and will never be held accountable in any way that matters…
I wasn’t.
I’m betting that the SCROTUS will allow the sentencing to go forward while everything is on appeal, because they can keep kicking the can back and forth, while preserving their “independence” and good image to the extent they have one anymore. That says nothing to their final judgement once all the appeals and limited immunity BS reach them through the normal means though.
IE since THEY cannot be effectively impeached, they’ll keep reminding Trump that unlike the legislature that he can get primaried on a whim, that they need to get their needs met as well.
Gratuities?

What needs?
Since Supreme court justices cannot be impeached, what are they worried about? What do they expect Trump to do, to meet their needs?
Edit: never mind.I just got ninja’d by Enipla. He said my whole post, better than I did, and with just one word.
My implication is exactly what @enipla suggested, but I’d also indicate a squashing of any efforts to do “little” things like legislature passing laws requiring an enforceable code of ethics for said SCOTUS.
Not that it’s likely going to need a presidential veto with the legislature at the current state, or even likely in 2026…
Since Supreme court justices cannot be impeached
Actually, yes, they can, but practically, it’s so unlikely as to be impossible. Procedurally, it would work similarly to impeaching a President: the House of Representatives would have to vote to impeach a Justice, who would then be tried by the Senate.
In 1805, Associate Justice Samuel Chase was impeached by the house, but acquitted by the Senate.
Only one Supreme Court Justice has ever been impeached. Here’s how the process works and what happened the only time it succeeded.
Supreme Court justice Samuel Chase, an ardent Federalist supporter, was known for his open partisanship both on and off the bench. He campaigned vigorously for John Adams in the election of 1800, and in 1803, gave a grand jury charge in the U.S....
I’m betting that the SCROTUS will allow the sentencing to go forward while everything is on appeal
Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh indicated they would have sided with Trump. That means Chief Justice John Roberts, who authored the immunity ruling in Trump’s favor last year, as well as Trump appointee Amy Coney Barrett, were in the majority along with the three Democratic appointees.
Of course, Judge Merchan has already signaled there won’t be any jail time, so it wouldn’t be a big deal anyway.

Right, but it does show that SCOTUS is not gonna rubber stamp anything and everything trump wants.
I hope for a suspended sentence and fines. With a suspended sentence, he could not associate with any known felons.
With a suspended sentence, he could not associate with any known felons.
He could, but he would be liable for violation of the terms of his suspended sentence. And then some legal official would have to do something about it. I think, effectively, this is a null threat.
What if he meets with a foreign criminal head of state, is that covered, or is it only domestic criminals?
Does he lose access to go to some countries, such as Canada?
After he stops being president, yes.
